There are 267 babies born every minute in the world, apparently, which means that there is a high chance that most years you will know someone who has had a baby. Bringing a small human into this world is a big deal and so most of the time it’s appropriate to buy a gift to celebrate.

The most obvious thing is to buy a gift for the baby, however, a gift for the mum is often what’s more needed and has a tendency to last longer than a plastic toy that will eventually get handed down. Below is our selection of gifts that any mum will be happy to receive.

Bath and body

While the baby sleeps, treat a new mum to an at-home pampering sesh with a treatment from Ruuby. Nails, hair, massage, facial – Ruuby’s skilled practitioners will do a sterling job of making a new mum feel her best. The service is currently available in central and Greater London, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and Kent.

There is nothing cuter than giving a newborn baby a bath, so make the experience extra special with this thoughtful mum-and-baby bath set from Neal’s Yard. There’s a massage oil and balm for mum, as well as baby shampoo and oil for the new arrival. All the products contain skin-conditioning botanicals and aromatherapeutic essential oils ensuring a soothing and calming experience.

This luxurious belly balm from this female-led, vegan brand, Summer Fridays, increases skin elasticity and has a velvety texture to it – perfect for post-baby bodycare. The packaging is also really lovely.

There might not be a lot of ‘me’ time in the early days, so an all-in-one makeup product will come in very handy. Ilia’s multi-stick will provide a bit of colour on the lips, cheeks and eyes and only takes about ten seconds to apply so she should be able to fit it in in-between feeds!

Food and drink

After nine months of no drinking, I’m sure our new mum would appreciate a nice glass of wine. Treat her to this very drinkable selection from Amie, the hip, vegan wine brand.

There isn’t much time to cook when you’ve got a newborn so this survival box of ten meals is a thoughtful freezer-filling gift that will ensure no one goes hungry. From macaroni and cheese to chicken pad thai, the box has everything you need for a comforting, quick meal.

You can’t go wrong with these gorgeous iced biscuits from Biscuiteers. Not only are they tasty and thoughtful but they also fit through the letter box. You can personalise them for an extra £2.50.

A alternative to champagne, this English sparkling wine is delicious and bubbly – and a great excuse to wet the baby’s head.

Fashion essentials

The first few weeks of a baby’s life are normally confined to the safety of a home. Treat a new mum to comfy but stylish tracksuits that will allow her to feel put-together but also comfortable.

Jewellery is a lovely go-to but Merci Maman allows you to take it up a gear as it designs pieces that represent that special bond between families. All items can be personalised, which makes this gift extra-special.

Cosy is key, so treat a new mum to these luxury cashmere bed socks from The White Company, available in six colours.

Help a new mum get some sleep with this stylish and comfortable sleep mask from Desmond & Dempsey. The iconic pyjama brand is known for its bold prints and luxe fabrics.

Home accessories

You can’t go wrong with gifting a scented candle and this one will get you extra bonus points as it helps to promote sleep and will also mask the smell of baby poop!

Sinking into the sofa with a full mug of steaming tea or coffee is probably not the one with a newborn. A thermal mug with a lid will reduce the risk of spillages and keep her precious caffeine hot for hours – so she can actually finish it in those rare spare moments. It comes in a variety of colours and is dishwasher safe, too.

Motherhood can be hard so this beautiful book will be on-hand to provide inspiration and support whenever it’s needed. Written by Gayle Berry, city lawyer turned baby masseuse, it combines unique, motivational letters from mothers all over the world.

Prepare a future mum for the next chapter of her life. This fun gift will make her laugh and look pretty cool in the home too!
