There are so many things to love about going to the hairdressers, but for me, there’s nothing that fills me with more excitement than heading to the salon ready to try out a new hair trend. I’ll basically use any excuse for making a change to my hair, but I always find transitioning into the new season provides a lot of inspiration for my new look.
While you might be tempted to go a bit lighter with your colour in the summer months, autumn is all about transitioning into warmer, deeper shades that glow in that golden hour.
By no means does the new season mean you have to lop off nine inches of hair or change to a drastic new colour. If you’re not comfortable with a full transformation, you can take ideas to your hair stylist and discuss which tweaks or slight changes can be made to your current look to give it an autumn update.
To give you some inspiration for your next appointment, we asked top stylists to share which hair cuts, colours and styles will be trending for Autumn 2022. Here’s what they shared…
Autumn hair styles you will see everywhere in 2022
Whether you’re looking to add in a few layers or completely change your look, these are the haircuts the experts say will be trending this autumn.
The sachel, aka the modern Rachel
Nope, we’re not talking about the style of bag. The Sachel is the “shag meets the Rachel”, i.e. the iconic 90s haircut from Jennifer Aniston’s character Rachel Green on Friends.
“If you’ve been growing out your shag this is the perfect moment to rock the modern Rachel. Keep it modern by leaving the shape around the face a little longer but still featuring those sliced layers,” says BaByliss Ambassador and Celebrity Session Stylist Syd Hayes.
With this look, adding a bit of texture is key to nailing the effortless 90s edge. Spritz Aveda’s Texture Tonic, £24, John Lewis, towards the top of the hair to add volume and prevent the look falling flat throughout the day.
The butterfly cut
“I think this look will be so popular over the Autumn with inspiration from JLo,” says celebrity hairstylist Lisa Laudat, who’s worked on the hair of Camilla Cabello, Selena Gomez and Nicole Scherzinger.
“The cut works by graduation: it has long layers for an illusion of length, and shorter layers just below the chin that frame the face. This look provides so much volume and shape. It’s always good going into Autumn to get the dead ends cut off, and this style is a way of getting hair back to its former health as well as looking on trend.”
The curly lion’s mane
“The curly lion’s mane is very much here to stay and I am still loving it – embracing volume and texture, no matter what the individual’s texture is. It’s all about working cuts to match the texture,” says Michelle Sultan, hair stylist and Imbue Creative Director & Ambassador.
“This cut is designed to look like a lion’s mane. Curls are layered equally all over the head leaving a shorter fringe. When the curls are styled they should be pulled out to maximum capacity to resemble a lion’s mane. This style can look really sexy; be sure to tease the hair out as much as possible.”
The 90s bob
“Moving into autumn I think blunt bobs will be really popular,” says Lisa. “The 90s bob puts the emphasis on the blunt look that is less layered and quite triangular-looking. I think the popularity of this cut will grow particularly since Kim Kardashian debuted her blonde bob, proving how the blunt cut can look sleek and chic.”
Use a detangling brush, such as Razzl Dazzl’s Duo-Bristle Lush Brush, £18, Razzl Dazzl, which smooths and de-frizzes hair as you brush, and then go in with straighteners to create a super sleek finish.
Liquid hair
Liquid hair has been growing in popularity this year, but there’s one product that has sent TikTok into a glossy-haired frenzy and cemented this as an ongoing trend for autumn: ColourWow’s Dream Coat Supernatural Spray, £26, LookFantastic. It uses polymer technology to repel water and give the hair a high-shine finish that will stop any frizz from forming throughout the day.
“I never leave the house without this product in my kit,” says Dom Seeley, International Creative Director at ColourWow. “It goes on every client’s hair no matter what look I’m going for. It ensures that the hair will be controlled in any situation, from humid hot weather to cold static weather.” It’s also a favourite of Kim Kardashian’s hairstylist Chris Appleton, so if you were ever wondering how Kimmy got her hair so sleek…
The octopus cut
“I love the octopus haircut because it breathes new life into traditional layers with its unique silhouette,” says Antoinette Beenders, Aveda’s Senior Vice President of Global Artistry. “It’s an easily-maintainable look when using the right styling products. What’s great is that it’s also a versatile cut that can be worn beautifully by those with all hair types and textures.”
The curl by curl cut
A technique of cutting as opposed to a set style, the curl by curl cut is growing in popularity, according to Michelle, due to its personalised approach to individual curl types. “This technique is used on dry curly hair rather than wetting it first, so you can see the shape of the hair cut whilst it’s being worn in its normal curly state.”
Eliza’s hair columnist Penny wrote about her curly hair routine staples and loves Imbue’s Curl Empowering Creme Gel, £6.99, Superdrug for definition and holding her curls all day.
The modern Scandi blow out
“The Matilda Djerf blow-out has taken Tiktok by storm and is here to stay,” says Samantha Cusick, stylist and Batiste brand ambassador. “Dramatic layers with face-framing bangs, styled in huge, extra AF, voluminous waves look perfect for any autumnal coffee shop date. Everyone is after volume in their hair right now.”
“My favourite way to quickly get some volume at the root is to spritz in some Batiste Dry Shampoo & Volume, £4.25, Boots, after styling. It gives you an instant lift, without having to backcomb or damage your hair.”
The Botticelli wave
Botticelli waves are the renaissance art-inspired hairstyle that celebrities have fallen in love with when it comes to the red carpet, but achieving them doesn’t require a team of hair stylists.
Find yourself a good three-prong hair waver, such as the Babyliss Cordless 9000 Waver, £180, LookFantastic, and you’ll be looking red carpet ready every morning. Yes, it’s a big investment, but it produces flawless waves worthy of an oil painting every time, and it’s cordless, making it the perfect hair tool to take with you when you travel.
Autumn hair colours
Looking for a colour refresh or maybe a total revamp? Scroll on for all the inspo you could need…
Honeyed up
“As we go into winter it’s good to get your hair in check,” says Lisa. “Through the summer, brunettes lose depth and blondes go lighter, so it’s always good to get a revamp. If you have blonde hair, I recommend adding more golden and honey tones to give it a more natural look like Ella Henderson’s style.”
High gloss Autumn glow
Brunette is an autumn classic, but Syd recommends elevating the shade for the season by adding some warmth and depth; “this new colour is a warm rich chestnut that has a subtle flash of that perfect golden hour sunset shade. Think of a brunette with a touch of golden warmth.”
To achieve a mirror-like shine that really makes those lighter tones pop, apply R+Co’s Gemstone Ultra Shine Glossing Treatment, £34, Cult Beauty as a once-weekly hair treatment.
Mushroom brown
“My prediction is that cool hues will be having a moment; think about brunettes that glisten with minky, pearlescent undertones,” says Joe Hill, International Technical Capability and Design Manager at Aveda UK and Ireland. “I hate the word beige as it sounds ever so boring, however it can be a true trend-forward favourite! Think of mushroom tones, neither warm/cool or light/dark.”
Copper club
Warm copper is the shade on everyone’s lips (or rather, heads) this year, and the trend is only going to gain strength as we roll back around into autumn according to Syd.
“I love these deep copper tones especially those Auburn hues. They’re hard to keep as they fade so quickly but always so beautiful on all skin tones. Ask your colourist if they can give you a top up gloss to use at home for when you want to add a little more intensity, or failing that, pop back into the salon for a little touch up gloss treatment.”
If you’re taking the auburn plunge, Wella Professional’s Color Fresh Semi-Permanent Colour Mask in Copper Glow, £15.75, Sephora, delivers salon-quality colour and high shine gloss in between appointments
Amber-bronzed brown
“Gone are the days of one-tone brunettes and blondes; it’s more of an amber-bronzed brown for autumn,” says Dom.
“Tone down the highlights and balayages to warm caramels and gold shades to compliment the season. I love where we are now in hair colour, as more and more people are embracing the warmer tones. It’s more complimentary for all skin tones, gives hair a much healthier finish and is more youthful as it adds a brightness to the look.”
