My name is Hannah and I’m a candle hoarder. There, I said it.
I’ve been obsessed with candles since childhood, when I’d sneak away tea-light candles from the kitchen drawer to try and fulfil what I was sure was my witchcraft destiny. Unfortunately, while the spells never seemed to stick, my love of candles did.
As a teenager I’d divert a shopping trip to immerse myself in the Yankee Candle aisle, and as an adult I will shamelessly smell every candle in the vicinity of any department store.
And along the way, I’ve gained what has become a pretty extensive candle collection that crowds every available surface in my flat.
Candles for each individual room? Yep. Candles exclusively for decoration? Absolutely. Candles for every season? Of course. Give me any excuse to light a wick and I’ll have already struck a match.
But there’s something especially comforting about autumn fragrances. Getting cosy with a book and blanket and your favourite candle flickering in the corner; quite honestly what could be better?
6 of the best autumn candles
So if you’re looking to level up your autumn nights in, I can attest that these candles are sure to bring about cosiness, warmth and contentment in abundance.
Maison Margiela Replica By The Fireplace Candle, £48
As much as it is a quintessential autumn/winter scent, I’m quite picky when it comes to smoky fragrances as I find a lot of them to be too overpowering. This candle, however, strikes the perfect balance.
Margiela’s By The Fireplace candle conjures exactly that; think crackling wood with notes of creamy chestnut sweetness on a chilly October evening.
& Other Stories Midnight Encore Candle, £17
For those autumn nights when you want to lock the door and turn the lights down low, this candle sets the ultimate mood. It’s a sophisticated and sultry scent, opening with notes of black pepper and filling the room with a cashmere woods and salted musk.
Signature Mimosa, Vanilla and Tonka Boxed Candle, £7.50
Sugary scents aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but if you’re looking for something different to a smoky fragrance, this vanilla and tonka candle is a sophisticated twist on something sweet. With floral notes of mimosa and spicy cardamom that create a warm and inviting space, this is an ideal scent for lighting pre-dinner party.
Skandinavisk Hygge Scented Candle, £19
If anyone knows how to do cosy girl autumn, it’s the Danes. Inspired by hygge, which seeks to create the ultimate cosy, contented lifestyle, this candle blends dried apples and a light sprinkle of baked cinnamon for a warm and enveloping scent. I challenge you not to feel peaceful and calm after lighting this candle.
Boy Smells Rhubarb Smoke, £50
If there’s one candle brand I’m always ready to splurge on, it’s Boy Smells. This brand’s scents are completely unique from anything else I’ve ever smelled, and you can get most of the fragrances in matching eau de parfums if you really want to make that your signature fragrance.
Rhubarb Smoke is a deep earthy scent with a smoky edge, blending notes of incense, rhubarb and violet leaves; the ultimate cool candle for the autumn months.
Sanctuary Spa Signature Sanctuary Candle, £12.50
Sanctuary Spa’s signature fragrance is one of the most instantly comforting candles, featuring a soft, indulgent mix of florals and spices that will transform your room into an oasis of calm. This is the ultimate candle to unwind to on an autumn evening, and at only £12.50, you can afford to throw in an extra couple of skincare treats to truly recreate a spa experience at home.
