Navigating the curly hair space can be tricky – and finding the products to fulfil your hair needs is difficult. However, there are some products I think are the best of the best and should be tried by all.
To save you the stress of finding them yourself, I’ve formed a shortlist of my top ten products for curly girls to try in 2023 (and beyond…).
Hair cleansers for curly hair
Tresemme Scalp Scrub – Purify and Hydrate
When your hair feels over-moisturised, squishy or flat, your normal hair products aren’t working for you; you need to strip your hair of excess oils and start afresh.
This is the formula to use on those occasions. I don’t think I have ever used a more effective clarifying product. It will really take your hair back to its barebones and it’s affordable, too.
Imbue Curl Liberating shampoo
Unlike the Tresemme Scalp Scrub, this one is for moisturising shampoo fans. It is sweet-smelling, defining, lathers well and cleanses without stripping the hair of its natural oils. I could use this shampoo three times over and my hair would still not feel stripped or dry.
(As an additional product to my ten, Imbue also has the Coil-Awakening Sulphate-Free Cream Cleanser, which is aimed at type 4 curls and is a great option.)
Conditioners for curly hair
Kerastase Curl manifesto conditioner
This conditioner feels like silk between your fingertips. It is moisturising, has incredible slip and the scent is light and buttery. It is a total dream product.
It’s probably also the longest-lasting conditioner I have ever owned. I took a 100ml bottle of it on holiday with me where I washed my hair twice, and I still came back with half of that tiny bottle left!
Davines Love/Curl Conditioner
The Davines conditioner has a beautifully thick texture and is both protein-rich and moisturising.
If your hair needs a little bit of strengthening and elasticity but you’re hesitant to use a strong protein treatment, this product is a great option.
Herbal Essences Hello Hydrate Mask
If you’re not massively bothered by ingredients and want stress-free wash days with products that will melt with your curls, make detangling a breeze and give you light-weight moisture and hydration at a low price, this is the conditioner for you.
Virtue Labs Curl Conditioner
The first time I used this product I was astounded by how well it made my curls bounce back after feeling limp and overworked.
The advanced technology behind the product ensures it is extremely effective at bringing curls back to life and it’s worth trying if you want a stronger protein treatment.
Styling products for curly hair
Innersense Create Volume Lotion
Innnersense is a brand that just knows curls. The ‘I Create Volume’ Lotion is probably my favourite styling product to exist. It’s a watery, light-weight gel with minimal crunch, leaves your hair with movement and in my experience, can make a wash and go last up to ten days. I literally can’t fault it in any way.
Boucleme Intensive Moisture Treatment
This product is a 3-in-1 wonder. It can be used as a pre-poo treatment, hair mask and leave-in conditioner/styling cream, so it’s a lovely product to experiment with.
I love using it as a styling cream, which is why I have put it in this section. It has a light-weight formula, and keeps curls moisturised and defined throughout the week.
Finishers for curly hair
Kerastase Elixir Ultime L’huile Originale
This oil is just magical; I like to use it as a finishing product or to scrunch out the crunch of my stylers. It has a velvet feeling to it, smells divine, adds beautiful shine to dull-looking hair and provides heat protection of up to 230 degrees.
Hair tools for curly hair
Tangle Teezer Wet detangler
I enjoy switching up my hair products, but I cannot compromise on my hair tools. I have been using the Tangle Teezer Wet Detangler for nearly three years and I will never go back to finger detangling or using a wide-tooth comb, because it has halved the length of my wash days.
And there you have it – my ultimate must-buy list. Happy shopping…
