It’s only spring time and I’m already in peak nail art heaven – 2023 has served up some utter manicure magic, and I’m so here for it.
Most noticeably, there’s been a real running theme this year in terms of colour schemes and *vibes*. While there’s a smattering of brights, 2023 has been defined by super-sophisticated neutrals.
I’m talking the naked nail trend, hi-shine lip gloss nails and the sheer vanilla French. If you prefer a pinky-nude shade when you go to get your mani, this is officially your era.
That said, there’s still great opportunity to have fun with your nails if you’re happy to be defined by trends. There’s aura nails, cat-eye nails and neon greens to play around with, as well as a whole load of bold embellishment.
And the best news? Most of these are easily achievable at home with the new influx of DIY sets and tools, all of which are linked below.
Happy nail art-ing!

Embellished nails
Whether it’s gemstones, sequins or stones, this year it’s all embellishment: go big or go home style.
This is an easy look you can achieve from home with the use of your gems of choice and a good strong glue (along with a steady hand, ofc).
Heart tip nail designs
I may be a little biased with this one (this look is from my own Instagram!) but it’s my favourite design of the year so far, and I’ve seen it all over the place since. Not just for V-day, this is a super-soft, romantic style for any time of year. Give it a go with a fine nail brush and colours of your choice.
Cat eye nails
Dubbed the next big thing by Eliza columnist Laura Capon, cat eye nails (otherwise known as velvet nails) have been absolutely everywhere. The variation on this look is part of its appeal; you can choose any colour and vibe, and at-home products exist to help you recreate it affordably.
Lip gloss nails
Lip gloss nails are perfect for those who prefer an understated set of claws. Neutral and super high shine, this is an easy one to replicate yourself with the right pinky-nude and a super glossy top coat.
Naked nails
In a similar vein, naked nails are another lovely pared-down option, based on finding the perfect neutral for your undertone as well as your skin tone. Editorial assistant Laren has the full guide to the trend to help you find your perfect hue.
Greens & yellows
Bucking the neutral trends, the vibrant colours of the season have to be neon or metallic greens and yellows. Wear them all over, on tips or in fun designs; just wear them somehow.
Aura nails
Another trend beloved by Beauty Insider Laura Capon, aura nails are super-pretty and ultra-unique depending on the style you go for. This is definitely easier to leave to the professionals, but Laura’s guide shows you can do it yourself with the help of some Blooming Gel.
The vanilla French
Another day, another neutral nail trend… I know, it’s getting a little repetitive. But just *look* how pretty.
The vanilla French is a super-sheer take on a classic French mani; just concentrate on less defined colours and lines.
Micro-tips
Chunky, thick tips are out, instead replaced by these dainty, ultra-fine micro-tips. The great news is you can get these easily with a steady hand at home, and can choose any colour you desire. This mint green look is a winner in my eyes.
Optical illusion nails
Finishing on perhaps the most complex, this design is best left to the pros to get clever with. Pretty cool though, huh?
