Perhaps the most-asked question I hear in my role as a beauty editor is how I nail my glowy makeup look. Over the years, I’ve really made this a focus of mine; Hailey Bieber and her glass-like base has become the ultimate goal, after all. And my answer? A skincare-first approach, ofc.
Essentially, if you have the skincare prep down, your makeup will look glossy, radiant and flawless – promise.
More specifically, it’s about honing in on hydration, particularly during these colder winter months; the more hydrated and plump the skin is, the more likely foundation, tinted moisturiser or BB cream will go on smoothly and last all day long.
This is where I discovered the power of Avène and its moisturisers. Avène is one of those brands that proves just how easy it is to get gorgeously healthy, nourished skin on a budget, thus leading in turn to less of a need for layers of makeup and instead promoting a more natural look. ‘No makeup makeup,’ anyone?
My skincare routine is surprisingly simple for a beauty editor – but for me, less is more, which Avène’s no-frills formulas play into perfectly. After a cleanse (or double cleanse in the evening), I turn to my treatment, which is usually a hyaluronic acid serum or something with niacinamide, before the most important step for ultra-hydrated skin: a supercharged, hardworking moisturiser.
Locking all that glorious moisture in with a lotion or cream is essential for my dewy makeup look, and my current product of choice is the Avène Hydrance Cream SPF30. This quenches my skin during cold winter months when dryness creeps in (not ideal for smooth makeup application…) and also protects against UVA-UVB rays, free radicals, and pollution.
Remember, SPF is so important year-round as a large percentage of UV rays can penetrate through clouds, so this handy two-in-one moisturiser and SPF is ideal and makes the whole process so. damn. easy. For lazy gals like me, products like this are an absolute godsend.
Makeup applies with ease across the skin after this product, too. It has a non-sticky, featherlight feel, meaning colour cosmetics sink in beautifully and last much longer.
If you suffer from sensitivity or have specific skin requirements however, Avène has the right moisturising solution for every skin need, you just need to find the right one for you!
Tolérance Hydra-10 for sensitive skin (from the brand’s newest range, launched in November), for example, is a minimalist formula with only 10 ingredients that hydrates and respects the delicate skin microbiome. Use this if you experience some sensitivity, rather than specific conditions.
Or if you have skin that requires more, the Tolérance Control for hypersensitive, reactive and allergy-prone skin is a winner. It calms discomfort in just 30 seconds* while hydrating, restoring the skin barrier and maintaining control of sensitive, reactive skin. It has a non-scented formula, meaning high tolerance for hypersensitive skin.
Both ranges – Tolérance Control and Tolérance Hydra-10 (as well as the one I use, Hydrance) – are perfect skincare prep heroes before applying your dewy foundation, brightening cream blush and light-reflecting liquid highlight. What’s more, each moisturiser is under £30, meaning they won’t break the bank even as we all learn to make adjustments due to the cost of living.
I really couldn’t achieve my end result without investing in the prep, and a solid hydrator is my number one recommendation.
