It’s funny how a burst of warm weather can instantly change your perspective on style. For me, it isn’t just the practicality of switching to my summer wardrobe; there is a lightness that comes with sunny weather that impacts the way I wear my makeup. I want less full glam and favour more of a fresh look with pops of colour. A low-maintenance way to achieve this is to add it to your eye makeup.
We are in luck right now, because there are endless vivid colours launching left, right and centre (call it the Euphoria legacy). This is my go-to technique, along with some of my favourite picks, to create colourful looks that last, and don’t bleed, especially if you’re wearing them to somewhere that requires staying power, like a festival…
Step 1:
Use a pencil to roughly trace a winged liner shape, on the water line and around the lash line
I love using a pencil to create my liner or smoky eye. You have complete control with a pencil, and they tend to be easily smudged if you need to resolve a mishap.
Start by taking this through the lash line, along the upper lash line, and wing out the shape as much as you’d like. The 19/99 Beauty pencils are super-creamy and come in an array of bright and wonderful colours.
On a more affordable note, the Barry M liners are fantastic and will allow you to experiment with a new colour for less.
Step 2:
Now it’s time to add some liquid liner to the upper lash line.
In order to get the longest possible wear, add a layer of liquid. I remember Mario Dedivanovic (makeup artist to the Kardashians and founder of Makeup By Mario) hosted a makeup masterclass years ago and explained that they key to lasting makeup was lots of layers.
Layer a stripe of your chosen colour over your slightly buffed in pencil, staying close to the lash line. Urban Decay is reclaiming its colour crown with an array of new, easy-to-use liquids with a translucent wash of bold colour.
For more of a dense colour pay off, try the Half Magic Chromaddiction eye paints.
Step 3:
Next, add a touch of glitter.
Glitter serves so many purposes. It adds instant magic to any makeup and is also the quickest and easiest way to distract from any makeup spills or blurs. Retrace the edges of your makeup with something easy like a Half Magic Glitterpill (Money Plz is my personal favourite, a universally flattering copper).
You can build this to your own desire, opting for a tiny hint of sparkle or layering a thick and theatrical finish.
Again, for an affordable alternative, Barry M offer finishing glitter touches aplenty.
Step 4:
Finish things off with a bold mascara.
Though you’ll still feel the impact of these colours with your everyday mascara, a coloured alternative will really be the cherry on the cake.
Colorpop ship to the UK now and is home to so many stunning mascara colours in unusual and colourful finishes. Or for a completely budge proof alternative, the Eyeko coloured mascaras are slightly more muted in tone but will truly stay put through a dip in the pool or a rave on a sweaty dancefloor.
Hopefully you feel armed and inspired to try something new. I filmed a video to show you how to create this look, which will be on the @Eliza.co.uk Instagram page. Take a look, and let me know what you’d love to talk through next. Let’s make our summer photos this year our favourite ones yet!
