Milk. It’s a foodstuff that these days tends to divide generations.
But whether you’re an oat milk latte kinda gal or a whole milk flat white fan, beauty brands are here to unite milk drinkers across the globe with their influx of brilliant milky treats on offer.
You may have noticed the shelves stocked full of milky offerings in recent years – and I’m not just talking about during your trip to Sainsbury’s.
Milk has become an ‘It’ ingredient within everything from skincare to hair products, with brands cleverly capitalising on our generation’s dedication to boujee coffee shop visits, where you stop by to pick up an expensive oat milk latte for your hot girl walk around the neighbourhood.
But is it actually any good?
What are the benefits of milk in beauty products?
As I’m sure you can imagine, milk makes for an ultra-soothing inclusion in any type of beauty product. Just think about those times when you’ve eaten something ultra-hot or spicy; milk is the perfect calming counterpart.
In a similar way, milk works in our products to reduce inflammation, calm down reactive skin, and hydrate dry skin or hair. For this reason, it’s great for conditions such as eczema, as well as those of us that feel a little dehydrated in general.
What’s more, products that utilise milk-alternative-of-the moment oat milk also have added benefits because of the oats used to make them. These include the ability to deeply hydrate, and to protect and restore a healthy skin barrier.
The best milk beauty products
Already sold? Here are my top six picks to grab now for the ultimate milky delight moment.
The oat milk cleanser: L’Abu Oat Milk Face Cleanser, £15
This is my favourite product from L’Abu thanks to its ultra-comforting texture and the way it leaves skin feeling super soft and hydrated.
It features apricot kernel oil, oat extract and rice bran for a gentle cleanse that removes makeup and daily grime buildup while leaving your skin brighter and softer.
I use this as a morning cleanser, or as my secondary evening cleanse after removing makeup. That said, it does also remove makeup easily, making it a brilliant versatile buy for £15.
The milk toner: Pixi Milky Tonic, £14.40
An appealing way to use milk in your skincare routine, this tonic glides on to soothe and calm in an instant. It contains jojoba milk and oat extracts, meaning double the benefits, too.
Simply apply it with a cotton pad for best results; it can be use in the AM and PM, but I find it to be the best treat for before bedtime to wind down after a busy, chaotic day.
The oat milk dry shampoo: Klorane Daily Tinted Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk for Brown-Dark Hair, £7.88
One of Klorane’s bestsellers, the Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk has defined the brand perhaps more than any other product in the line.
It gently cleanses hair and absorbs excess oil without leaving residue behind or messing with the hair’s texture too much.
What’s more, the product now comes in tinted options for darker hair, making it a buy everybody can get on board with.
The oat milk shampoo: Briogeo Be Gentle Be Kind Aloe + Oat Milk Ultra Soothing Shampoo, £24
Want to enjoy the trend in your shower too? Briogeo’s Aloe + Oat Milk line is worth investing in.
The product harnesses the power of soothing aloe vera and rejuvenating oat extract to ensure sensitive scalps are tended to ultra-gently, but with enough efficacy to make a difference.
Also in the range is a conditioner and a leave in detangling mist.
The milky body cream: Fresh Milk Body Lotion, £12
There’s perhaps nothing more irresistible than a milky body lotion to apply after your nightly bath or shower. Fresh’s uses not one, not two, but three types of milk to really pamper you: rice milk, centella milk and linseed milk.
It has a lightweight yet luxurious feel, which sinks into skin but leaves you feeling hydrated and satisfied until morning time.
And just look at the cute milk bottle packaging! You just can’t beat it.
The vegan milk face cream: Milk Vegan Milk Moisturiser, £34.50
This formula by Milk features the longest list of trending ingredients I’ve seen in a while. As well as the hero fig and oat milks included, the cream contains shea butter, baobab, jojoba, aloe vera, hyaluronic acid and squalane to deeply hydrate skin.
For this reason, it’s excellent for normal to dry skin types that need an extra moisture boost, and is lovely for your PM routine to tend to skin as you sleep.
