Those of us old enough to own an original Shaving Ken doll will remember the forever iconic 2007 Barbie Loves MAC collection. It may have taken 16 years, but we now finally have a new Mattel-themed range to obsess over thanks to NYX Professional makeup.
This time round however, it’s not just about Barbie; NYX has bought some ‘Kenergy’ to their limited-edition collection as well.
What’s in the NYX Barbie collection?
Consisting of two frankly adorable mini eyeshadow palettes, one mini cheek palette, two matte lip creams, one pair of ombre falsies, one butter lip gloss and a flip phone mirror, there’s really no excuse not to be living your best Margot Robbie (or Ryan Gosling) life.
The palettes
At £12 a palette, you’d be forgiven for thinking the eyeshadows might not be the best quality, but one swatch of the glittery lilac in my ‘Turn up the KEN-ERGY!’, really was giving straight up Pat McGrath vibes.
What’s even cuter is that it comes with a mini clear lip gloss that you can attach like a keyring. So not only can you live out your Barbie fantasy, you can also embrace the TikTok girlie one as well.
In terms of packaging however, Barbie’s mini eyeshadow palette is a clear winner with the iconic ‘B’ logo that you’ve seen all over that A.D. Dreamhouse tour video.
For me, the only downer of the entire range is the On The Go Cheek Palette, which comes with two blushers and a highlighter. While I found the pink shade surprisingly pigmented, the orange wouldn’t suit me and I’m not a fan of powder highlighter.
The mirror
Palettes aside, my favourite thing from the entire collection and the one that almost softens the blow of never owning a pink Motorola Razr, is the pink Barbie flip phone mirror.
Yes, I should probably give it to my 3-year-old niece, but no I definitely won’t, because nothing and I repeat nothing will make me happier than whipping this out of my handbag for a mid-lunchbreak lipstick check.
The lip products
NYX is known for its lip products and there are two shades of its iconic Smooth Whip Matte Lip Cream to choose from: ‘Dreamhouse Pink’ or ‘Perfect Day Pink’.
If you want something a little more subtle, I’d go for the Barbie Butter Lip Gloss, which gives just the right hint of pink.
Overall, this is a really exciting launch from a high street brand and one that might signal the turn of drugstore brands taking over limited-edition collections.
