Hi, I’m Rose Gallagher, makeup artist and content creator. When people ask me what my main goal is with any content I produce, I say this: “I’m going to teach you how to be the best you’ve ever been at your own makeup.”
But before we get into that, I’m going to start with a little story. One of my best friends Zoe is a personal shopper. Zoe is just stunning; never without a big bouncy blow dry, olive skinned (she’s Greek and from Australia), naturally pretty, and looking immaculate every time you see her.
As a fashion expert, her wardrobe is built on timeless staples. One of the reasons we’re such close friends is that we make each other laugh, and nothing amuses Zoe and I more than my wildly clashing, colourful outfits whenever we have dinner. To be honest with you, I purposefully push the boat out whenever I see her just because we get such a kick out of it.
Jokes aside, Zoe’s approach to clothing is that the staples of your wardrobe are imperative, and can make those colourful impulse purchases really come together. She encourages her clients to invest the most money in their jeans, much to their bemusement. “I walk the dog in my jeans,” they tell her. “I do the school run in them,” they add; “I wear them all day every day!”
And this is precisely her point. Your jeans are the thing you’ll be wearing the most, so you need to feel absolutely fantastic in them. Despite being surrounded by all kinds of designer newness every single day, Zoe sends her clients home with timeless staples before venturing into anything else.
Like fashion, this approach absolutely works within beauty, too. After many years working as a makeup artist, my favourite part of my week is still creating makeup how-to videos online, usually about the basics. Like Zoe, I am lucky enough to have access to all kinds of incredible makeup newness every week – but none of it really works unless you know those essential tips and tricks and have your core products to pair the newness with.
Last year, my new year’s resolution was to write down every single makeup question I received online and work through them in my videos. What I gained was an intimate and telling insight into what we really want when it comes to makeup – and the same core questions always come in time and time again, such as:
· How do I prevent my concealer from sitting in fine lines?
· Can you teach me how to do a smoky eye on hooded eyes?
· Why has my foundation disappeared by midday?
I have now realised that there is a way to cover these classic, evergreen questions while still including new products. By using fresh and exciting launches to demonstrate timeless and effective techniques, I could have some fun but continue to nail the basics. And that’s exactly what I plan to do here every fortnight.
This column is ultimately about YOU. What do you want to know? How can we make your routine that bit easier? You can find me @RoseGallagher on Instagram, and I am ready and waiting to hear your questions. Let’s make you the master of your own face and have some fun along the way.
