Although it might not seem possible, we’re slowly retreating from winter’s grip and heading towards what is in my opinion, the best time of year: spring.
Extra bank holidays, chocolate galore and a sense of everything coming back to life, what’s not to love about this season? No doubt you’ll be in the mood for a physical spring clean of your beauty routine (if you can’t remember when you bought that mascara, it’s probs best to get a new one), so why not use the start of the season to refresh your makeup look and try something new?
From the runways to celebrity MUAs, I’ve gleaned which looks will be the most sought-after for spring 2023.
Spring 2023 makeup trends
Whether you’re a minimal makeup lover, looking for any excuse to don a full face of glam or always on the hunt for an abstract aesthetic, spring’s makeup trends have got something for everyone.
Underpainting
While the makeup technique of underpainting has been around for a while, it’s blown up on Tiktok after Mary Phillips shared this was how she achieved Hailey Bieber’s and Kendall Jenner’s glowing, softly-contoured look. There’s that Hailey Bieber effect again…
Instead of applying your bronzer or contour and concealer after your foundation, apply it first to ‘lay down the bones’ of your face. Apply them in the areas you usually would, then gently sweep a lightweight, luminous-finish foundation over the top with a fluffy brush, and finish with a touch of blush. It’s as simple as that.
Loren Liner
Inspired by its namesake Sofia Loren, the Loren liner is a love child of the double-edged liner (hello Dior) and the ’60s makeup aesthetic trends that have been circulating last year.
A black and white eyeliner are the two most important parts to achieving this look, as well as a pair of winged-out lashes which will help you achieve that lifted cat-eye look.
Cyborg Skin
Glazed doughnut skin? So 2022. This year is all about the ethereal Cyborg Skin, which takes inspiration from our probable futuristic robot overlords.
While skin prep is an important element of this look, a mix of highlighting products is what you’ll need to nail it. Liquid highlighters and those with a duo-chrome finish are perfect for that Cyborg-inspired finish.
You can find my guide on how to get the Cyborg Skin look here.
Smoked-Out Wing
A hybrid of the classic smokey eye and a black winged liner, the smoked-out wing takes a softer approach to extending the look of your eye while bringing in some of that ’90s grunge feel.
Here’s a tip I’ve learned when doing this look myself (it might seem a backwards way of doing it, but it works): applying some half-lashes before you start can make it a lot easier to know which angle to apply your eyeliner, as you can follow the elongated slant of the lash.
Frosted Lipstick
I know I said we’d be leaving the cold in winter, but it doesn’t look like anyone can resist the return of the frosted lip, not even the celebs.
Spring 2023’s take on the return of the frosted lip focuses on wearing shades closer to your skin tone to give a finish that’s fresh and more of a ‘highlighted’ natural lip than the pale pink frosted lips we remember from the ’90s (shiver).
Gothic Brows
While bleached brows had their big moment in 2022, the alternative eyebrow trend is heading in a different direction for 2023.
Skinny brows are back (millennials, I’m sorry), and this time they’re even thinner than before. Models such as Gabriette and Amelia Gray have spearheaded the trend. Different from the ’90s brow you might remember the first time around, gothic brows are super thin and angular, and are usually paired with a white eyeshadow to highlight and accentuate the brow bone.
Not ready to reach for the tweezers? Try KVD Beauty’s Brow Pomade in White, and brush through your natural brows to get that ‘bleached’ effect, before going in with a brow pencil to draw your temporary skinny brow.
No Makeup-Makeup
If you were hoping to see the back of this trend this year, I’m sorry to say it’s going nowhere (tbh, I’m not mad about it). Luminous skin, balmy lips, gently-brushed brows and soft contouring are going to be the staples of spring, mirroring the romantic feel of the season.
Don’t be deceived into thinking this is only a daytime look; to take it up a notch for a last-minute date night or evening plans, add extra definition to your lashes while keeping them natural and fluttery with some undetectable eyelashes.
Pop Lips
Statement lips are back in brightly-hued tones for spring. Think popsicle colours such as fuchsia pink and poppy red. Using a lip liner to outline the lips before going in with lipstick will give that perfectly-sculpted finish that won’t bleed throughout the day.
Let your lipstick do the talking with this look and keep the rest of your base pared-back and natural, with a slick of mascara on the eyes to tie the look together.
