Wednesday Addams stands for so many things I love: solitude, moody vibes and ofc, that main character energy. And Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday? Well, she’s just the absolute queen of cool. From those stripey knits to *that* gothic lace dress at the dance (Alexa, play ‘Goo Goo Muck’), she’s become a bit of a wardrobe icon since the Netflix adaptation dropped.
But as a beauty editor, I was preoccupied noticing the smaller details others perhaps may not have: I’m talking the plaited hairstyles, smudgy kohl liner on the eyes and those divine stained berry lips.

To say that Netflix’s Wednesday is a beauty hero is an understatement: she is the moment. And that gothic pout? The look of the season.
It’s berry like you’ve never known it before: moody, mysterious and full of attitude. Rather than being pretty and precise, it’s pressed in and smudged at the edges, almost blood-stained looking (very on brand for our protagonist).
The exact lip combo worn by Jenna Ortega in the show was recently revealed by makeup artist Tara McDonald to be MAC Cosmetics’ Lip Pencil in the shade Nightmoth, mixed with a little clear balm.
“The idea was for her to look like she had naturally dark lips,” she told Cosmopolitan. “I didn’t want it to look like she was wearing lipstick.”
Of course, you can invest in the pencil and balm for an exact match, but my solution is a little more cost effective (with options starting at £3.15) and totally fool-proof: the humble lip stain.
There are so many around this time of year (autumn/winter is the time to wear a berry hue), and they’re so unbelievably easy to apply and keep on all day/night long.
Want to know which ones will provide that ultimate Wednesday feel? I tried a bunch so you don’t have to. These are my favourites:
e.l.f Glossy Lip Stain in Berry Queen, £6
This was without a doubt my favourite budget buy I found on my quest – it offers a deep berry tint but is still very wearable and flattering without feeling too gothic.
The finish is (as its name suggests) glossy, but once you pat the product in with fingers and even blot with a little tissue paper, it dries down to a more traditional stain.
Hard to beat for £6.
Fenty Poutsicle Hydrating Lip Stain in Berry Banger, £17
Fenty’s lip stains caused a TikTok flurry earlier this year after launching, with makeup fans praising the long-lasting formula and gorgeous colours. The trick is to apply then wipe off the top layer for more of a matte stain.
Berry Banger is the hue to reach for if you’re looking to do a Wednesday: it’s pretty similar to the e.l.f product, but a little deeper in colour and more long-lasting.
Relove by Revolution Ghostin Lip Stain Bitten, £3.15
The lip product to try if you’re keen for more of a blood-red stain (Wednesday would approve), rather than a deep berry. It comes out initially as a fairly bright red, but once patted down, is a little more muted.
At £3.15, you literally would be hard pressed to find a more affordable stain on the market – and trust me when I say, this one is really long-lasting. In fact, you may have a little trouble getting rid of it!
VBB Bitten Lip Tint in Bisou, £32
These lip tints are perfect for those who hate traditional lip stains. They still stain the lips with long-lasting colour, but they feel a little less drying on the whole.
I adore the nude shades (particularly ‘Poupette,’) but for this brief, ‘Bisou’ fits rather perfectly.
Yes it’s an investment, but it really does nail that nonchalant Wednesday vibe.
