It’s Barbie’s world this summer, and while we might not be living in it (unless you fancy renting out Barbie’s Malibu DreamHouse on Airbnb!), everyone who is anyone is dressing like they are.
Lizzo, Dua Lipa, Simone Ashley and, of course, Margot Robbie, who’s taken on the iconic Barbie role, are all part of the Barbie outfit gang. And what do their Barbiecore inspired looks all have in common? Pink!
From way back to the Valentino AW22 show where models and celebs alike were dressed head to toe in bright neon hot pink, to Florence Pugh wearing that incredible sheer pink dress at the Valentino couture show last summer, to this year’s Pantone colour of the year Viva Magenta, the colour pink is picking up the pace as Barbiecore-mania looks set to saturate our feeds this summer.
Bright, endorphin-boosting, and never ever dull, there’s no surprise we can’t get enough of wearing the colour pink, whether we’re picking out a statement pink dress for a wedding or brightening up an outfit for work with some pink wide-leg trousers.
The world premiere for Barbie took place over the weekend, and the celebs and stars were out in their best looks – Margot included. She wore a strapless embellished black gown with a tulle hem, which on first glance, might not seem rather Barbie-inspired. In actual fact, it’s inspired by the Solo In The Spotlight Barbie from the 60s. |conic.
Just as Barbie has a closet full of different looks, celebs are also trying out various Barbie-inspired fits, from Barbie’s gingham dress and power pantsuits to swimwear and festival inspired looks.
We’ve been shopping for all of them so you can add something Barbie-approved to your wardrobe just in time for summer…
Gingham Barbie
For the Barbie press tour, Margot Robbie recently wore this pink gingham two-piece set, inspiring lots of summery pink gingham outfits perfect for weekend picnics and garden parties.
Birthday Wishes Barbie
What do Lizzo and Barbie have in common? A sensational taste in statement pink dresses, from Barbie’s birthday wishes tulle layered dress to Lizzo’s dramatic gown she wore for her Brit Awards performance. Head to Asos for the best selection of pink tulle dresses to buy right now, which all scream “it’s my birthday” and I’m going to wear the best dress in the room in the best possible way.
Collection Barbie
Kendall is another celeb who’s stunned in a hot pink look that Barbie would be proud to wear. You can shop similar strapless silhouettes at Anthropologie, Karen Millen and Nasty Gal, while Amy Lynn has a tulle hot pink dress in a longer length and v neck.
Designer Barbie
I’m obsessed with the hot-pink mini dress Maisie Peters wore to the Royal Academy – the perfect dress for a cocktail party and special events. It’s giving Barbiecore, with a rebellious popstar twist. From styles with dramatic puff sleeves to exaggerated bows, the dresses below will all give that main character Barbie energy.
Fashionista Barbie
For a look that says supermodel meets Barbie, let Hailey Bieber be your inspo in this insane pink sequin mini dress. Style yours from the below for your next big holiday night out – just find a disco ball and the best dancefloor around.
Beach Barbie
Never one to miss a trend, Kim K has jumped on the Barbiecore bandwagon in the way she knows best: swimwear. I’m obsessed with the matching pink sarong from her latest Skims collection, which you can still shop from the Selfridge’s pop up until Saturday 8th July.
Desert Fashion Barbie
Florence Pugh and Desert Fashion Travel Barbie might not be dressed in exactly the same outfit, but they do have something in common: festival energy. Re-create the look with your own pink festival pieces, from tassle jackets to hot pink jumpsuits.
Floral Barbie
As Dua Lipa and Fashionista Barbie both illustrate, Barbie outfit inspiration doesn’t have to stick to pink as a block colour, because florals also count. For extra Barbiecore points, mix florals with sequins or stick to bold flowers rather than small ditsy prints.
Power Pantsuit Barbie
Invest in bright pink tailoring for workwear looks that’ll take you from day to night this summer. It’s the easiest way to inject some mood-boosting colour into your office wardrobe. Or, if your shopping wish list is leaning more towards going-out looks, there’s plenty of pink party pieces, like the sequin and feather trim trousers below.
