I’ll let you in on a secret: I’ve had a bandeau bodysuit sitting at the very bottom of my drawers that dates back to the early 00’s. It’s a pretty simple design, featuring a small knot in the centre in a classic black shade, and although I haven’t reached for it in nearly 20 years I’ve never been able to bring myself to part with it.
Thankfully, my hoarding has paid off because the 00’s style bandeau top is having a revival with celebs like Hailey Bieber and Sofia Richie Grainge, all making a case for why it should be an essential part of your 2023 summer wardrobe. After all, not only is it oh-so-nostalgic but it’s also simple, sophisticated and extremely versatile, plus it comes in so many different styles it can work for all events and occasions with ease. Don’t believe me?
Here’s my edit of the 10 best bandeau tops to buy now (if, unlike me, you don’t have one stashed away waiting to be re-discovered).
The Striped One
The Breton jumper was the style to be seen in last autumn/winter and this striped tube top is the summer equivalent. Pair with blue jeans or white linen trousers to tap into the ‘yacht girl summer’ movement.
The Knit One
A knit bandeau top may seem like an oxymoron but when you take into account the current unreliable weather we’ve been having it may just be your style saviour. To ensure you aren’t left overheating if the sun does shine, pair with something light like linen trousers or a slip skirt.
The Side Split One
If you’re looking for a modern take on the tube top, a side split style like this one is the answer. Wear it untucked to show off the detailing and give your look a chic silhouette.
The Bright One
While bandeau tops may be simple when it comes to shape, it doesn’t mean you have to stick to classic colourways. A bright bandeau is a must for any holiday wardrobe and at just £10 this one from COS is a steal.
The Sweetheart One
I’d argue a sweetheart bandeau top feels less 00’s more, 1980’s-inspired but that isn’t to say it won’t work in your wardrobe today. Opt for a ribbed texture for a more relaxed feel and wear with less formal bottoms like cargo trousers or denim.
The Textural One
Proof that not all bandeau tops have to be basic, this linen tube top is about to be my summer staple. I love the rust shade and the ruched detailing feels a little bit different without being OTT.
The Satin One
Looking for your next jeans-and-a-nice-top fit? The satin bandeau top is the answer. Ideal for giving those quiet luxury vibes, this would look great paired with everything from 90s style balloon pants to wide-leg jeans, or even split hem leggings and slingbacks.
The Mesh One
Okay, okay this one is officially a 00’s throwback. The cropped lettuce-edged hem, the tie-dye print and the mesh fabric all scream OG girl band and I’m here for it. Plus, the matching co-ord skirt takes this look to the next level with minimal effort.
The Tailored One
A round of applause for River Island for giving us another unique bandeau style in the form of this tailored top. With chic gold buttons(but a zip back for convenience) and smart pocket detailing, it’s giving blazer 2.0.
