If there’s one thing you’ll always see me wearing over summer, it’s a bodysuit. Whether I’m on holiday, in the office, or meeting friends for drinks on a sunny evening, I will no doubt be there in a new bodysuit. I now own 22 (yes, probably a bit excessive) and that’s still not enough in my books.
They’re perfect for dressing up and equally as ideal for more casual looks. Pair them with heels for a night out, a blazer for the office, or trainers during the day and you can’t go wrong.
I wear mine with shorts or a skirt during the summer months and finish the look off with a pair of sunnies, a belt and sandals or heels. You’ll always look more streamlined and put together in a bodysuit, not to mention, much sexier too!
Here’s how to find the perfect bodysuit…
Make sure you always size up
Most people think they should size down, but this couldn’t be further from the truth – there’s nothing worse than wearing a bodysuit which is too small for you.
The quickest way to tell if the bodysuit you’re trying on is too small is that it’ll ride up.
Alternatively, you don’t want to risk buying a bodysuit which will be too baggy at the bottom. This is why it’s important to get the length right. A good way to test the bodysuit is by sitting down while wearing it to see if any part feels uncomfortable.
The right fitted bodysuit should hug your body nicely and take the shape of your figure.
Think about the fastening before you buy
I’ve been on many nights out where I’ve worn a bodysuit without a fasten, and I’m always full of regret. After having had a couple of cocktails, taking it almost entirely off every time you need to use the bathroom is a faff.
My favourite type of fastening includes hooks. These are the safest options as the ones with poppers can be unpredictable.
The best way to choose which type of fastening you prefer is by trying a selection on pre-purchase.
Choose a flattering neckline
There are so many different types of necklines that it can be hard to decide what to opt for. My all-time favourite is a square neck bodysuit. They look so elegant and still have a good amount of coverage.
If you’re looking for something a bit more evening-friendly, I would recommend a V-neckline or if you are feeling particularly adventurous then try a plunge neckline.
Strapless bodysuits make the ultimate base for summer outfits. Note that if you have a bigger bust then they can be more challenging to wear and might slip down, but don’t let this stop you. Simply stick a piece of body tape to the inside of the top of your bodysuit and the other side to your chest. Make sure your skin is dry so that the tape sticks well. Et voila!
Three ways to style bodysuits whatever your summer plans:
1. Exploring on a city break
If until now you’ve only considered wearing a bodysuit during the evening then you may be forgiven. But they’re equally as great for plans during the day. Whenever I’m on a city break there’s two things I always consider.
Firstly, I want to be comfortable for all the walking around, and secondly, to look stylish. And a bodysuit ticks both those boxes. Wear it with a pair of jeans, trainers and trench coat and you’ll have street style nailed.
2. Rooftop drinks with the girls
There’s nothing better than dressing up to go out with your besties, and a bodysuit can be the best option for a smart casual look. If you’re going fancy then I’d opt for a V-neckline or plunge neckline. Obviously black is a typically flattering colour but colourful bodysuits also look fab in the summer.
Wear them either with a pair of shorts or a skirt and add some kitten heels, a small shoulder bag and gold chunky jewellery and there you have it!
3. During a beachside holiday
Say you’ve just spent the day at the beach and you’re now getting ready for dinner back at the hotel (just writing that made me want to go on holiday), then lace bodysuits, one shoulder bodysuits and strapless bodysuits are what you should go for. They’re the dream pieces paired with a long or midi skirt. Throw on some tanned sandals and a basket bag and I’d say you’ve got holiday eveningwear sorted.
