Hands up if you’ve ever lusted after a Burberry trench coat? (I can envision a sea of hands in the air.) Almost everyone I’ve spoken to about fashion has a fantasy ‘if money was no object’ wish list, and right at the top next to a Chanel Jumbo flap (we can dream, right?) is a Burberry trench coat of some kind.
There are no two ways about it, the Burberry trench is a cult classic for a reason. It is good. It’s a perennial staple – from the classic shaping to the appeal of its wearability. It’s a piece everyone can appreciate, regardless of style preferences. It suits all ensembles and offsets fancier occasion wear.
It’s become one of the most widely coveted fashion items and one that’s increasing in both value and popularity, which is a marker of a special piece. Whether we’re searching for a pre-loved Burberry Trench coat, or eager to visit a Burberry outlet, we all want one.
There are many trench coats to rival the highly coveted Burberry number if it’s not quite within your price point, or you’re simply looking for an alternative. Many retailers and mildly-priced designers are offering considered cuts and good quality materials with forever appeal.
Although some of these offerings are slightly steeper, they’re worth saving for and a far cry from the price point of Burberry. Keep reading for Burberry trench coat dupes that have piqued my interest lately.
Jigsaw
You’ll certainly get your bang for your buck with this Jigsaw number. I’ve seen it in real life and it is every bit as special. There are many styles to admire within one compact design. To start, it has an oversized fit, which is perfect if your style leans towards androgyny. It also features a trend-led silver waist buckle that you can cinch in to create a pronounced silhouette. If I had one piece of advice, I’d size down as it’s extremely oversized.
Selected Femme
Don’t sleep on Selected Femme! The Danish retailer should be applauded for its efforts with sustainability and use of considered materials. Take this trench, for example – it’s made from Tencel, which is a certified biodegradable fabric. Cornstalk describes the hue perfectly; it’s a buttery yellow that’ll suit all complexions. Throw it on top of a Parisian-inspired ensemble and you’ll be good to go!
Arket
Arket is my go-to for high street staples and every year it releases a handful of timeless trench coats that make me question whether I really need to invest in a Burberry trench. The quality of this piece is sublime and it’s bound to last for years. Although this style is reminiscent of a ‘car coat’ – with a straight fit compared to a belted flared style – it’s still incredibly classic. These styles are among the most popular in Paris! Wear it open for a casual look and to expose your outfit underneath. Be sure to size down for a more streamlined fit. This is an alternative if you prefer a belted style.
COS
COS spearheads modern silhouettes on the high street. The quality of its outerwear in particular is exquisite. Yes, the coats come in at the higher end of the price spectrum compared to some high street versions but the design features reflect that.
Hush
The Iona trench is a particularly stand-out piece purely due to the fabrication, although it’s a piece that needs care and gentle steaming before wear. It’s crafted from 100% lyocell, which lends it a certain drape and lightness, so it’ll be a good one for transitioning into the summer months. The fit is relaxed, so it’s the perfect ‘throw-on’ piece.
Everlane
Everlane’s gathered trench has a relaxed feel compared to the starchy cotton shapes that are best associated with trench coats. It may be best suited to those who prefer more sway and movement with their outerwear. It comprises a relaxed lapel and single-form buttons, which gives it a tailored silhouette, so it’s a great one to finish off a workwear look. The colour is something worth noting too; whereas most ‘traditional’ trench coat offerings are in a pale stone, this hue is described as an ‘ash brown’, so it’s slightly warmer.
Simply Be
Unfortunately, finding a good plus-size trench is no mean feat, however Simply Be released this worthy contender, just in time for spring and it’s available in sizes 10-32. It features many qualities that are reminiscent of designer pieces – from the double-breasted feature to the open vent, silver hardware (which is having a moment) and pleated skirting.
River Island
A 100% cotton trench coat gives the structure and feel of a typical trench coat but this design has elevated features – including ribbed cuffs and ever so slightly puffed shoulders. Don’t fret, it still offers classic shaping.
Rouje
French woman do it best when it comes to perennial staples, so when Parisian brands release trench coats, I pay close attention. Case in point – the Adina trench by Rouje. This gabardine offering is a beauty. The pale stone colourway will pair well with pops of colour and it features tortoiseshell buttons that are characteristic of a typical trench coat. It’s as classic as they come!
