It’s a hill I’m willing to die on: pregnant people deserve to be comfortable at all times. It’s non-negotiable. People growing humans also need as much sleep as possible, so it follows that nightwear must be comfy.
What comfort looks like will be different for each of us, of course. Maybe it’s dark colours to hide pesky night-sweat stains or unexpected colostrum leaks (the glamour!). Maybe it’s bottoms that don’t dig into your belly when you’re trying to get comfy in bed, or tops that you can continue using once it’s time to flop a boob out 50 times a day. For me, when I was pregnant, I wanted loose, soft and airy without feeling drab and, you know, *mumsy*. I still wanted to feel like me.
So, here are six of the very best brands for maternity pyjamas. I’ve prioritised designs that work after baby arrives to give you more longevity for your cash, and you’ll find a mix of independent makers and high-street brands too. Oh, and all designs come in at under £50. Did someone say extra baby clothes?
Chelsea Peers
Best for: variety of styles
Chelsea Peers has established itself as a go-to for comfy and affordable PJs, and things are no different over in its maternity section. The sheer variety of designs and styles are super-appealing – if you’re a warm sleeper, this oranges print set comes with shorts, or if you’re after long sleeves and trousers, this olive satin set in a cute bee print slides in at the £50 mark.
If you’re after something plain and unfussy, this pink striped set is gorgeous and made with recycled fibres. The button-up design makes it suitable for breastfeeding down the line too, and there’s even a pocket to hold a breast pump attachment.
P.S if you can’t wait for delivery, you’ll also find some styles stocked in John Lewis.
H&M
Best for: affordability
H&Ms maternity range is so far from an after-thought that it has its own name (we love to see it). The MAMA range of maternity pyjamas feels carefully curated, so at the moment we’re talking mostly pastel strappy tops and short combos for the spring/summer months (though this checked red set has got Christmas bump written all over it, for the planners among you).
If under-bump designs don’t do it for you, this heart-patterned pair has shorts with a wide waist panel you can pull right up over your bump.
Might I recommend a couple of maternity bras while you’re at it? I practically lived in them once my little one was born, and this two-pack doubles-up as affordable crop-tops comfy enough to sleep in on the warmest nights.
Lindex
Best for: ticking all the comfort boxes
If you hadn’t heard of Scandi brand Lindex before pregnancy, I’m super-excited to be introducing you to the brand now. I practically lived in its PJs when I was pregnant myself, even ordering a second identical set when the (utterly ghastly) night sweats kicked in. The classic MOM pyjama set, with long-sleeved button-up shirt and bottoms comes in four colours – black, red, light blue/green (Light Aqua) and a deep aubergine shade that is, confusingly, called Dusky Lilac.
There are also night dresses and night shirts, which are generally harder to find on the high street but ideal for spring/summer months and to throw in your hospital bag too.
Oh, and if you’re feeling *fancy*, this 100% Merino Wool nursing top is under £30.
ASOS
Best for: fun designs
Packed with options for the fans of dopamine dressing, ASOS offers maternity pyjamas that prioritise fun. A bit of pizazz could even be just what you need to keep powering through (though we’d forgive you for relying more heavily on that one cup of coffee you’re *allowed* instead). You’ve got designs like this head-to-toe leopard print one, while these ones have pink fringed sleeves and bottoms, because why not? Something for the Babymoon, perhaps.
Alternatively, if your main craving has been for a lime green set adorned with dinosaurs and lobsters, walk this way.
Their Nibs
Best for: supporting women-led business
The story of Their Nibs is a sweet one. It was founded by Fiona Bell, previously head of womenswear at Laura Ashley, after the birth of her first child. Now the brand is entirely women-led, and its creation and flexible workplace practices supported Fiona to have a second child via adoption. The brand’s commitment to slow fashion means a limited number of prints are available at any one time, and they currently offer two under-Bump designs.
The cotton shirts come in an extended length with split sides for extra room, and the bottoms are elasticated and roomy.
I also love its realistic sizing; small is a high street size 10, and designs run up to 3XL, or roughly a 22-24. As I say, this really is a brand made by women, for women.
JoJo Maman Bebe
Best for: classic and clever designs
For mums-to-be looking for no muss, no fuss designs, JoJo Maman Bebe’s maternity jammies will almost certainly deliver. We’re talking muted navys and greys, lots of flattering stripes and clever designs; this Breton-style set, for example, has a concealed opening over the boob for breastfeeding once baby has arrived (or just airing yourself off as and when you please).
Additional features like back slits for extra growing room and drop-down clip straps make these genuine maternity pyjamas.
Plus you can pick up a bundle of cute baby clothes at the same time. I mean it would be rude not to, really.
