It was 2017 when this hem length hit the mainstream and ever since midi-mania is everywhere you look – from cocktail hour, to weddings and even the office.
Why buy a midi dress?
Why are they a must-have? They are universally flattering, whilst being feminine and flirty – and all without showing too much leg. Plus, they work all year round becoming a wardrobe staple of note for the transitional seasons.
Which shoes should I wear with a midi dress?
When wearing a midi dress across the seasons, the only thing you need to change is your footwear: choose trainers or sandals for summer and pull on your boots for autumn.
Fans include the Duchess of Cambridge, who has been spotted wearing them and re-wearing them to many of her public events – and most are from hit high street brands including Zara, Ghost, & Other Stories, L.K. Bennett and Boden.
Emily Ratajkowski is also a frequent wearer of the trend, Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner are enthusiasts too. And you’ll frequently catch Holly Willoughby clad in one for This Morning. Whether you’re searching for the perfect date night dress, a holiday hit or an occasion outfit, these are the six brands to covet.
The best midi dresses to shop in 2023
Best for vast offering: M&S
It’s hard to find another brand that matches this high street behemoth in terms of both price and quality. Their online selection of brands is huge with great names such as Sosandar, Nobody’s Child and Jaeger – but their own collection still hits the mark. You can’t go wrong with its bold printed styles which, since they come in at under £40, are a no brainer. Simply style it with trainers or chunky sandals for a throw-on casual look.
Size range: up to size 24
Best for summer styles: Anthropologie
With a dedicated section online, aptly named The Dress Shop, you’re sure to find a midi here. I go to Anthropologie for holiday buys mainly. Its strapless tie-front styles are begging to be whisked away somewhere hot. Floaty midi dresses will also be gorgeous for humid summer nights. For something airy, their bright lace dresses are top of my wishlist. Simply add a raffia basket bag, a pair of tie-up sandals and lots of gold jewellery.
Size range: up to size 16
Best for work: COS
If you’re not into print, head to COS for minimal Scandi-feel designs in simple block colours. The gathered midi dresses are seriously figure flattering, plus they have pockets. I also have my eye on the easy-wearing contrast panel style, ideal for hot days that are hopefully on the horizon. For a colour-pop classic, try a belted shirt dress in pretty pastel tones.
Size range: up to size 18
Best for printed styles: Jigsaw
This Brit operation has been churning out gorgeous designs since 1970 – a true stalwart in today’s fast fashion world – and, boy, do they know what they’re doing. I love the attention to detail and the fantastic fit of the designs. Its v-neck styles with cinched waists would work well for a day in the office and then for a date. I also adore its easy jersey styles. Wear with white trainers or with strappy heels in a contrasting shade for extra oomph.
Size range: up to size 16
Best for smart casual: Mango
Mango’s amped-up styles are perfect for hitting that oh-so-tricky smart casual vibe. Choose from slinky satin wrap styles, daring cut-outs and sleek bodycon fabrics. I adore a fitted knitted midi dress, especially in a bold graphic print like this striped style. For something a little less fitted, its A-line styles are definitely a must-look and this embroidered style is just perfect for BBQ’s and Easter garden parties. Just add platforms and a cocktail ring – outfit sorted!
Size range: up to size 18 in main collection
Best for wedding guest: Ghost
Count this as your one-stop shop for an occasion dress. If you have a wedding in your calendar or a big birthday to attend, you are guaranteed to find your outfit here. The price point is slightly higher, but their designs are timeless and will last for many more outings to come.
For a less is more look, the bias-cut satin dresses are simple yet striking and come in different colours including, ivory, navy, camel and a pale pink. Button-down dresses are another top satin style. I love the Meryl and its pretty belted waist and the plunge V-neckline.
I also have my eye on the Palm – a sell-out silhouette – in a pretty pink or pale lilac. The classic silhouette can easily be dressed up all down meaning extra cost-per-wear value after the main event has passed. Simply switch your heels for a pair of sandals for an easy everyday look.
