Move over, jeans and a nice top. A top and statement trousers has entered the chat and it’s about to become your go-to party look. You see, while I’m a big fan of the traditional combo there’s something just a little cooler about re-working it and slipping on your favourite sleeveless vest and a pair of stand-out trousers instead. And, while the effort level is most definitely the same (win win) and nicely ticks the smart casual box, it looks like you thought about your outfit just that bit more than pulling out your favourite top once again.
Want to know where to start when it comes to shopping for the perfect pair of statement trousers? Here’s my pick of the best styles and how to wear them for serious style points…
Silver statement trousers
If there’s one style of statement trousers that’s taken hold this season, it’s a high shine silver pair and honestly, I don’t know why I didn’t have a pair of these in my wardrobe sooner. Faux leather styles have my heart but there’s also a host of different fabrics on the high street, from cargo styles to smarter tailored fits. When it comes to styling, think of these as the winter version of white jeans, so they look great paired with neutral knits or even a crop top and blazer for a more dressed up look.
Metallic trousers
Okay, okay, I wanted to soft launch you into statement trousers before I brought out the big guns AKA the coloured metallic trousers. These fabulous styles definitely aren’t for the fashion faint-hearted but that doesn’t mean they aren’t totally wearable too. For an easy night out look, wear them with a simple bodysuit, or, take on the tonal trend and pair with a matching top or knit to rock one shade head to toe. I’d always keep accessories minimal with these styles too after all you don’t want to overpower your outfit – with these trousers less is most definitely more.
Embellished trousers
Embellished trousers come in many forms: tassels, feathers, fringing, they’re all out and there and screaming to be added to your party wardrobe ASAP. As Leonie Hanne proves with her matching feathered vest, your top can be simple yet it doesn’t have to be boring – co-ordinating details can help take your outfit to the next level when employed subtly. Want to make it easier for yourself? These Nasty Gal trousers also have a matching top for a ready-made outfit combo.
Sequin trousers
Nothing says party season quite like sequins so obviously I had to add some sparkly sequin trousers to my must have styles. These are a classic that can be pulled out year after year to instantly have you feeling festive. I’d wear these with a weighty white t-shirt or a classic roll neck (Uniqlo’s heattech styles are my go-to at this time of year) for a simple yet chic look. Want to ensure your legs look as long as possible? Ensure your trousers just skim the floor and add a pair of strappy heels for a statuesque appearance.
Printed trousers
If you’re looking for jeans rather than trousers you can still get on board with this trend, just opt for a printed pair for the perfect top and nice jeans fit. I love an artistic style print for a whimsical feel but you can also go for something a little more kitsch like these fun Free People cowboy jeans if that’s more your style. Wear with a simple white shirt half tucked in for an effortless finish.
Sheer trousers
Sheer trousers may seem intimidating or more suitable for the beach but let me show you how they can work for your next night out too. To start you’re going to want to think about your underwear, after all nobody wants to be rocking a pair of sheer trousers with their bum on show. Go for a seamless boy short in black to ensure your modesty is well and truly covered. (Check out our advice on what to wear under sheer clothing next…) I’d also suggest pairing your trousers with a longline shirt or blazer as even if you don’t mind flashing the flesh the peak of skin will look chicer than having everything on show – it’s all about mystery.
