It’s easy to overlook your nightwear wardrobe and simply stick on a holey old T-shirt and a pair of ropey leggings, but we spend over a third of our lives in bed, so what we wear when we’re in there really does matter. Comfort is key, of course, but there’s nothing better than a beautiful pair of cosy pyjamas to make to feel good – and that’s particularly important when winter comes and climbing into bed is even more appealing.
The last few years has seen a sales surge in nightwear as we’ve all spent more time in our homes and, ultimately, our beds. This means the sleepwear selection has never been better and it’s never been easier to find a comfy pair of PJs that look great too. From the high street stalwarts (hi, M&S!) to the independent brands that make beautiful sleepwear their mission, this is where to go to get great cosy pyjamas now…
M&S
You just can’t beat M&S when it comes to sleepwear. The selection is vast (and at times overwhelming!) so sifting through styles online is your best bet to find exactly what you’re looking for. Yes, there are some slightly fugly options lurking on its shelves but there are also some really classic pairs, and even the option to personalise some styles. The Rosie Exclusively for M&S range, designed by model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, always has at least one pair of long-sleeved satin pyjamas to offer, and always in a beautiful print, so if you can’t face sifting through the hundreds of available options makes that your go-to.
Uniqlo
Uniqlo isn’t known for its nightwear, but it does it really well. There’s nothing fancy, just really well-designed, classic winter pyjamas that, thankfully, eschew the usual cliches of counting-sheep motifs. The 100% cotton flannel pyjamas in a classic tartan check are particularly good, wash really well and will last you for years. But if flannel isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other fabric options as well as a good selection of separates so you can mix and match to create your own sleep sets.
The White Company
The White Company sells a lifestyle that many of us can’t resist, and its sleepwear selection is a huge part of that. If you’re after incredibly chic pyjamas – the kind you imagine the female lead in a Nancy Meyers movie wearing as she wafts around her sprawling Santa Barbara abode (IYKYK) – then it’s the place for you. From classic white (of course) cotton sets to jersey numbers that bridge the gap between sleepwear and loungewear, the quality is enough the justify the slightly higher price tag.
Honna London
Founder Barbara McMillan spent a decade as a fashion editor, writer and stylist before founding sleepwear brand Honna London in 2019. Looking to fill a gap she saw in the market for luxurious, seasonless sleepwear that was produced ethically but didn’t cost a fortune, she created a collection of classic striped pyjamas that quickly gathered a legion of fans.
The brand has since branched out into nightshirts, nightdresses and robes, and its popularity only increased as we all leaned into comfort dressing during the pandemic, but it’s the classic pyjama sets that have become its signature. Though an investment, they are a worthy one.
Myza
Myza is an online store that specialises in sleep-related products – from bedding to breakfast crockery and everything in between – selling both its own-brand pieces as well as other brands. Its own label pyjamas are a real treat, all are made from 100% cotton and they come in an array of gorgeous prints, from classic stripes to bold sea life scenes.
H&M
H&M really is a one-stop-shop for everything from underwear to workout wear to partywear, and nightwear is included in that. It serves those that want a classic cosy pyjamas shirt-and-trouser set to those that want something that leans more towards loungewear for bedtime. Seek out its Conscious Choice range for pieces that are made of at least 50% more sustainable materials, so you can sleep a little sounder knowing you’ve considered sustainability too.
