I can happily announce the three little words that are music to our ears: it’s rosé season. And with that brings a plethora of long bottomless brunches and catch-ups with friends.
Say goodbye to any gaps you had in your social calendar. The return of summer marks a string of outdoor plans hitting our diaries once again, and we can finally shake off the layers and go out without a heavy jacket. Feeling a little out of practice at getting dressed properly and spending all day drinking in the sun? Don’t worry as here’s some advice for what to wear to day drinks this season.
I prefer plans that revolve around drinking in the day and still get me safely into bed by 11pm. My ears prick up at the suggestion of a bottomless brunch or a trip to the pub circa 2pm on a Saturday.
I wouldn’t say no to a late afternoon rooftop bar session either. But what to wear? Just because the sun is still up, it doesn’t mean you can’t get dressed up. Okay, you might want to leave the ball gown at home but if a nice dress is your thing, there’s nothing wrong with that.
My go-to outfit for a passion fruit martini (or five) with the girls is high-waisted jeans and a cute cropped top complete with some kind of cut-out detail or puffed sleeve. I’d probably wear a light knit over the top, or an open denim jacket, ready to be whipped off if the plans continue into the evening and the dance floor comes calling.
Scroll down for perfect outfit combinations that are chic, but won’t feel like you’ve tried too hard. You’ll have more time to concentrate on the important things, like do you go for Whispering Angel or Minuty?
For pub garden drinks
One of my favourite fair weather outfit combinations – the summery midi dress paired with trainers to dress it down or boots to sharpen the look, works every time. Oh, and lots of accessories, of course.
It’s effortless and comfortable, plus it’ll see you through a day (because let’s face it, it’s always a full day) at the pub. My favourite brand for glorious dresses is Kitri, pair one of their midis with Veja trainers or a pair of chic ankle boots.
Or, this playful mini from Outsiders Division (a Spanish brand I became obsessed with after seeing its latest collection at 080 Barcelona Fashion Week), would be equally as fitting with some trainers, chunky boots, or sandals.
For bottomless brunch
This LA-French hybrid look of shorts, a T-shirt and a blazer, never goes out of style and is ideal for a bottomless brunch. The shorts make it playful, whilst the blazer keeps it chic.
Works with any short style, but my go-to is blue denim cut-offs like these ones from Pull & Bear. Go for a thick white t-shirt and an oversized boxy blazer – Zara do great affordable options.
For drinks in the park
Double the fun, but half the effort – double denim is a look that works for a whole variety of occasions, and park drinks are one of them. Levi’s is the obvious choice for good quality and affordable denim – try the Ribcage style which are a personal favourite.
Pair the jeans with a bright crochet top to spice things up, and layer up with an unbuttoned denim jacket. This will go well with some trainers in a complimentary colour, I reckon. Oh, and don’t forget your trusty crossbody camera bag — I love this one from Kipling.
For a boozy lunch
Whether it’s a top with a skirt or trousers, a co-ord instantly makes a simple look appear elevated. Ribbed-knit two-pieces are very on-trend and will keep you warm into the evening, which is key when a boozy late lunch often ends up turning into a fun lengthy affair. Or go for bright florals or a pastel coloured pattern to stand out from the crowd.
For rooftop cocktails
An easy way to dress up your jeans is to pair them with a detailed blouse, which is ideal for a stylish rooftop situ. Try a Broderie Anglaise version, or plump for ruffles and a statement collar.
Go for a split hem on your trousers a la the Instagram style set, and elevate your look with a handful of gold jewellery pieces – my favourites are from Missoma.
