I know, I know, ‘new year, new me’ is such a cliché. And if you’re anything like me and never actually stick to the goals you set yourself every January, then it’s time to break that cycle.
You aren’t alone, either – I can guarantee that loads of us are feeling a little lost right now. The last thing anyone wants to do after a busy Christmas break is find the motivation to make a list of things they have to achieve in the new year – and that’s why a good place to start is your wardrobe. Think of your wardrobe as a reflection of who you were last year, and who you want to be this year.
I started by sifting through pictures from the past year, noting what type of outfits I wore the most, and asked myself a few questions: what if I’d worn something with more colour at that event? Or glammed up a bit more for that dinner party? And what if I swapped shorts for dresses during summer? Then I took a long look inside my wardrobe. For the final step, I asked myself what was missing and what would be more exciting to try this year.
With that in mind, these are my fashion resolutions for 2023. Here’s hoping I stick to them…

Fashion resolution 1: Invest in daytime dresses
Whenever I’ve considered wearing a dress, it’s always been for evening plans or on holiday. Something fancy usually comes to mind, and always paired with heels. In the past it would never have crossed my mind to wear one in a more relaxed way by day, or while working from home, especially in winter. I’d always turn to a jumper and leggings. Typical. But it’s now time to change that way of thinking.
Although I started to make this change last year, this time round, I’m actually planning to stick to it. Firstly, I’ll change up my loungewear to give myself a break from sweatshirts and trackies. For now, I’ll incorporate knitted dresses, then come summer, more floaty, linen styles.
Fashion resolution 2: Try a new style – logo t-shirts & hoodies
Give me a fancy dress code and I’ll be there. Tell me to dress more casual and I might flake. Okay, maybe not that drastic but I LOVE fancy occasions. My personal style doesn’t really leave much space for anything else. Example: I think I only own two pairs of jeans, (that should really be a resolution, shouldn’t it? Maybe next year) but 5916 pairs of smarter trousers.
So, this year, I’m going to try a completely new style, one I’ve always thought of as quite cool but not really my vibe. Hoodies don’t have a place in my wardrobe unless it’s to walk my dog, and logo t-shirts don’t exist in my life yet. This style probably doesn’t seem that ground-breaking for many people but it’s the one I’m most excited to have a go at. It might last about a week, but you don’t know until you try!
Fashion resolution 3: Continue to grow my trainer collection
Versatility is an important fashion trait, and although we can all have preferences, being comfortable in a range of different clothes and shoes will change your attitude towards how you feel about yourself.
I’m not a big fan of trainers. For the majority of 2022 I had one pair; the classic black Converse All Star, which I began to wear everywhere when I needed to walk a fair distance. But look at the top shelf of my wardrobe and there are many, and I mean many, pairs of heels.
Trainers never seemed like a good investment to me. In the past I’d choose to splash out on pieces which I could dress up, like a designer handbag, boots, or a smart coat, but as my needs changed, so did my way of thinking.
I’ve already added two pairs of trainers to my collection, choosing colours which would go with every outfit – it means I can keep costs low by having a few versatile pairs on rotation. And if you look after them well and choose good quality brands, then hopefully you will only need to make limited trainer purchases in the future.
Fashion resolution 4: Wear more colour throughout the year
Most of my wardrobe consists of neutral colours, and although it’s great because you can pretty much mix and match everything, there’s a danger that my outfits can sometimes look a bit mundane. So, this year I’m making a conscious effort to throw some colour into the mix.
I could never completely move away from greys and blacks (because, aesthetic), but a good way to start is by choosing to wear colour at specific times of the year.
I’ve always wanted to wear more reds and greens (not together unless I want to look like a Christmas tree) as both colours complement my dark hair and olive skin tone. Orange and yellow are also colours I want to try more over spring and summer.
As with all new year resolutions, it’s easy to become disappointed if you don’t end up sticking to them. If it’s something you really want to achieve, then perseverance is key. You are already halfway there by just going through the thought process. It’s now time for the execution. It might take a while, but you will get there. I believe in you!
