Anyone who lives in the UK will be on constant red alert for rain. For 33 years now as soon as there’s a drop of moisture in the air, I’ve grabbed an umbrella and then immediately regretted my decision.
An umbrella, to me, is the one item that has the power to make me feel like I do not have my life together. And that is never chic. A day in the life of me and an umbrella usually starts with not knowing how to fit it in my handbag, followed by it turning inside out at the smallest gust of wind, poking someone in the head with a rogue spoke, then the finalè, leaving it behind on the train. Only to buy another umbrella and repeat the pattern all over again.
And do you know what? I’m done. This year, the year of 2023, I am giving up umbrellas and instead replacing them with waterproof clothes that make me feel like I have my life together. Hats
The first thing I want to be protected in the rain is my hair. Luckily, bucket hats are still having a moment and are perfect for keeping your head dry.
Brands such as Rains and Barbour have timeless, minimal styles all year round that’ll keep you looking chic, but if you’re after something fun and bright then I cannot recommend the brand Rain Kiss enough – practical but with patterns that will keep you smiling through brutal rainstorms.
Coats
Gone are the days of dowdy waterproof coats, there are now so many amazing options available that should be a staple in your wardrobe. If you’re after something smart then consider a waterproof trench that won’t look out of place on your morning commute.
Alternatively you can try a parka style which is a bit more casual and is perfect for heading out to see friends at the weekend.
If colour is your thing then some of the traditional outdoorsy brands like Berghaus have really upped their game with some bold designs that’ll cheer up the greyest of days.
If you want to simply protect your non-waterproof coat then consider a poncho. They fold up teeny tiny in your bag and you can throw them over your entire outfit as soon as it starts to rain.
Trousers
Unless it’s monsoon season, your waterproof coat or poncho should protect your bottom half. However, there are definitely some trouser styles that are more rain-friendly than others. Steer clear of highly-absorbent fabrics like satin and denim (soggy jeans are not the one), and instead opt for leather, vegan leather or vinyl as you can just wipe the rain away.
The rain-proof boots
Nobody wants soggy feet so it’s worth investing in some short water-resistant boots that can pass as normal boots when the rain clears up. Mini wellies are perfect for splashing in the puddles and will see you through to festival season, too. Try brands like Ganni and Hunter for truly waterproof options.
