OK, so you’ve made it. It’s that pivotal point in any relationship that can really test the strength of your connection: meeting the parents. Now there’s no doubt that they’ll love you but meeting your boyfriend/girlfriend/significant other’s parents for the first time can be nerve-wracking for anyone.
Now, there’s all sorts of situations you can find yourself in here. You could be going to a family party, going out for a nice dinner, or just a casual lunch or brunch. But with each of these scenarios comes the (often) stressful issue of deciding what on earth to wear. You want to be dressed appropriately for the occasion, but also feel comfortable and not like you’re not being yourself. It can definitely be tricky to feel like you’re ticking all the boxes.
But there’s no need to worry; I’ve picked out four different outfit formulas that should have you covered for almost any of the above situations – and a few pointers on what to maybe avoid right at the start. I’ve also mostly stuck to picking items for one look from one brand to try and make the shopping process a bit easier if you need to run out in a last-minute emergency. Of course, these are just rough guides and you can totally switch different items in and out depending on what works for you. Good luck!
Option 1: The smart suit
I love a suit for all kinds of occasions as it always makes me feel put-together, confident and sophisticated, so it’s a great option for that first time meeting the parents. In terms of settings, this is probably best for something like a nice dinner out or somewhere where you know you need to be more formal. Zara are at the top of the suit game right now as they have so many different variations – a pastel set is ideal for spring/summer without being too bright or garish. Slip on a silky camisole underneath and pair with neutral heeled mules. An embellished bag is a great option as it can add a bit of colour and personality to the look.
Option 2: The summer dress
If, however, you’re meeting in a more casual setting, a classic patterned midi summer dress could be the way to go. With just one item you’ve basically got an entire outfit sorted, taking a whole bunch of stress out of the situation. Also, they’re just super-comfy while still looking put-together. It’s the best combination. Mango have a great selection of these kinds of dresses at the moment. I’d pair one with leather loafers and a matching shoulder bag for a more relaxed but versatile look that would be perfect for a weekend lunch date or an outdoor summer barbecue.
Option 3: The casual daytime look
Not everything has to be smarter or more dressed up though. Sometimes it actually feels better to not feel like you’re trying too hard. Say your plans involve going over to their house for a chilled brunch or for a walk (weather permitting, obviously), then you may want to opt for something more casual. Some dark, high-waisted flared jeans are a really nice option for this kind of situation without feeling you haven’t made any effort at all. To balance things out a bit, pair the jeans with a pretty floral blouse and finish with Chelsea boots and a trench coat.
Option 4: The feminine evening look
Let’s go back to the evening looks for a minute though – if a suit isn’t really your thing then you could always go for a skirt and top for something softer and more feminine. This combination would work well for anything from a nice dinner out to evening drinks or a special family event (and if this is the case you could be meeting the whole extended family in one go, so you really want to be feeling your best). The spring/summer collection from & Other Stories has some brilliant pieces to help with this look.
If you do want to jazz it up, you can add some colour with your accessories. A pair of coloured heels with a co-ordinating (or clashing, depending on how you’re feeling) handbag are an easy way to make the look feel more special.
What to avoid:
Lace
Items like lace shirts or blouses, or even skirts, tend to be very transparent so it’s probably best to avoid them for the first meeting – or save them for a night out with your friends, just to be safe.
Sheer fabrics
The same goes for any other kind of sheer fabric. This can be great for an evening outfit or a date night, but their parents probably don’t want to see your underwear (or more).
Anything very short or tight
This is mainly so you don’t feel uncomfortable. The mini skirt, for example, might be back in fashion but if you’re already feeling a bit nervous or apprehensive the last thing you want to be doing is fidgeting with a skirt or pulling at a top to make sure it stays in place.
Super-high heels
We’ve all been there when we’ve bought a pair of heels that are so high we can’t walk in them properly. It’s not the best look or feeling. Avoid any injuries or cringe moments by sticking to lower heels or flats.
Anything uncomfortable
And lastly, avoid anything else that would cause any discomfort. You want to feel relaxed and confident so wear whatever makes you feel your best and this will automatically translate into the energy you give off.
