Hey team eliza, I’ve got a new job (woo!) in a creative/tech department and I really want to make a good first impression when I start next month. I definitely need to up my workwear game as I was able to dress quite casually for my last role, especially as I’m stepping into a more senior role. Is navy suiting all there is?! I really want to look fashion-forward but smart, and ideally only want to buy 5 or 6 new things to spruce up my wardrobe as I’m on a budget. SOS!

Congrats, Sasha! Your new job sounds fab, and I totally get that you’ll want to go a bit smarter for the senior role, but workwear definitely doesn’t need to be boring – even those in corporate jobs can have fun with jewellery and hair accessories.
A creative role means you can bring a bit more personality to your looks by day, so if you’re not keen on black or navy – green, burgundy or pale blue are punchier alternatives.
Also, I can promise you don’t need as much as you think you do: five pieces is actually ideal for a work capsule wardrobe.
A shirt is a must
First off, a shirt. It sounds like a basic addition, but I don’t mean the starchy, optic-white kind.
Arket’s oversized style comes in six different shades, but the pink or oatmeal striped ones are particularly great. You can wear them now with ankle boots and tailored trousers, and chinos and mules come summer.
Consider your footwear
I would recommend a great pair of loafers. Start at Charles & Keith for styles that feel exciting – think giant gold buckles, mock animal texture and coloured soles. They’re cute with socks and tights, too, so as you’ll be wearing them year round, they’re a great investment.
Head to Cos or Massimo Dutti if you can afford to spend a bit more.
Choose comfy but stylish trousers
A smart pair of trousers will elevate a knit and trainers but also work with your oversized shirt and loafers for the days you have important meetings.
Stylish wide legs are the most modern: they’re slouchy without looking sloppy. These M&S trousers are the comfiest pair in my workwear rotation, and they have a matching top if you like co-ords.
A dress is an excellent addition
A capsule wardrobe isn’t complete without a dress, and there’s one to suit every style. I’d suggest steering away from bold floral prints: a statement dress will feel tired if you wear it every week, so aim for one which you can build on to make the look.
A midi that you can dress up and down, which works with a blazer on top or a fine knit underneath, and looks great with knee-high boots or flats is a winner. Isn’t this patterned Mango one chic? I’d wear it with my Veja trainers.
Opt for a smart jacket
Finally, a blazer is a workwear saviour, and you’ll throw it on over everything from t-shirts and polo necks to smarter shirts.
I love a classic checked one – Zara’s offering is great this season – but if you want something even more summery, this bold yellow one is super slick. Good luck!
