90s fashion trends are constantly being dug up – jelly shoes and skorts, anyone? – and whilst many come and go, the slip dress is just as iconic now as it was back then.
It’s difficult to think of the sassy style without conjuring up the nostalgic image of Kate Moss in that sheer slip dress (circa ’93). And then there’s been iconic nineties parties and red carpet moments from Naomi Campbell, Gwyneth Paltrow and Sarah Jessica Parker, just to name a few. Name a style icon that hasn’t been papped in a slip dress – go on, I dare you.
The nineties gave way to the ‘underwear as outerwear’ phenomenon (much to our father’s dismay), it’s been trickling down into our high streets today. The slip is a fashionable, standalone piece and I for one love how it makes me feel – it’s forgiving, sleek and sexy.
I like to wear mine on a date with sandals and a leather jacket to dress it down. It’s also on my list for an upcoming wedding guest option abroad – I know a silky number will look great with a tan, some strappy heels and a matching silk headband.

Layer It Up
Layer your slip dress over a tee for that iconic 90s look, or style it with a blazer on top for one of the most versatile outfits. Try a colourful slip, worn with a plain white T-shirt. Add extra bonus 90’s points with a boxy leather blazer and chunky dad style trainers.
Working Nine to five
Hello, the 90s, is that you? What could be more of a modern take on a throwback than the cute floral slip dress. This dress gives ’10 Things I Hate About You’ vibes; the perfect floral dress to make you summer festival ready, or for a warm day at the office. For the latter, pair it with a lightweight shacket and a pair of summery mules.
Date night
This is the perfect ode to that underwear/outerwear dressing – a short slip dress is so sexy and still so chic. Pair it with a block heel for date night dinner, or for crazy golf, dress the look down with trainers.
Go wild with jewellery – think chunky bracelets and hoop earrings – the dress is so plain it can take it. Add a pop of colour with a cute bag too.
Out of Office
There’s nowhere better than a beach club or late dinner under the stars after a long day sunbathing, for the slip dress. It’s comfy and flattering and if you pick one in the right hue, it’ll show off a glowing holiday tan a treat.
A bright slip is a must pack for your next holiday: block colours are having a bit of a moment, so go for clashing coloured sandals and add an open linen shirt to cover you from the cool evening breeze.
The OG
The classic satin slip dress is an easy slip-on-and-go style which harks back to Naomi Campbell on the 90s catwalks. A heavier weight satin will ensure your dress doesn’t get mistaken for your undies and will keep giving all summer and beyond.
For a no-nonsense look, pair a beautiful midi with pastel mules and a cute chunky cardigan worn loosely off the shoulder.
