The barely-there slip dress alludes to the privacy of sultry nightwear but in a sophisticated and empowering way. Marilyn Monroe knew it in the 50s, Kate Moss in the 90s, and countless celebs on the red carpet since.
While sheer dressing is being pushed to the extremes on this year’s red carpets, wearing a *slip of a dress* endures as a timeless way to confidently reveal that little bit more.
When warmer days and holidays roll around, a slip dress outfit requires zero effort (other than putting on a pair of sliders or strappy heels!) But, for now, I’d personally love to feel more confident in putting together a slip dress outfit no matter the weather. Of course, I’ve turned to Insta for inpso.
Here are some of my favourite slip dresses on the high street to buy now and styling ideas for your next slip dress outfit.
Bright & colourful slip dress outfits
From spring weddings to hen parties, a bright slip dress is a quick way to add a simple pop of colour to your wardrobe. If you’re more of a minimalist dresser but want to escape the neutrals and all-black outfits for a day, stick to block colours rather than prints. Just add a leather blazer and you have an extra layer to beat the chill.
If you’re a fan of a co-ord, Omnes have a slip dress and silky cardigan combo. Spring perfection.
Minimalist layering
Wearing a semi-sheer top underneath a metallic slip dress is a magical combination and a lesson in the art of layering. Take Rita’s dressy slip outfit as inspiration – anything too heavy underneath would detract from the silky fabric of the slip.
Lightweight tops for layering:
Add a blazer
You can’t go wrong with layering a blazer over the top of a slip dress, especially when the blazer’s oversized in contrast to the slinkier silhouette of the dress.

The classic LBD
One of the most versatile slip dresses you can invest in is a super-chic and minimalist black slip. Wear on holiday with chunky sliders by day and strappy metallic heels by night.
Or rock a mini LBD
An ultra-mini black slip dress might feel extra daring if you’re not on your hols, but you can toughen up the look for a night out here with long black boots.
Add some sparkle
If you’d like your slip dress outfit to say ‘glam night out’ rather than ‘night in’, pick out a style with a touch a sparkle.
Animal print
Treat yourself to a printed slip and you’ll be throwing it on over a neutral bikini by day (we’re loving all these Hunza G dupes) or dressing it up by night with layers of gold jewellery and dressy sandals. Then when you’re back home, team with a black blazer and you have your next dinner and drinks outfit sorted.
Florals
Need an outfit to roll up in your bag for a city break or sunny beach holiday? Cue all of these cute floral slip dresses.
Scoop neck slips
For a dress that’ll work day-to-night, switch spaghetti straps for an effortless scoop neck or V-neck style.
If you’re feeling the chill you can layer up with a soft knit over the top in a co-ordinating colour.
