Valentine’s Day is upon us and it’s time to think about the most important part of the occasion: what to wear. Whether you’ve got a hot date lined up, plans to meet with friends or are simply celebrating at home – or perhaps not at all – February 14th is the perfect excuse to dress up your Valentine’s Day outfits and feel great (not that you need an excuse!).
We’ve rounded up five perfect formulas that will ensure your Valentine’s Day outfits get all the love.
1. Leather skirt + tank top
A leather skirt is a real modern-day wardrobe hero. It’s transcended the trend moment to become a staple that you’ll bring out again and again, because it can be worn for so many different occasions, in so many different ways.
For Valentine’s Day outfits, take Abisola Omole’s cue and team your leather skirt with a simple tank top and some embellished heels. Her tonal take – pairing two different shades of red – is perfect, but any colour combination, from neutrals to bold colours can work.
The best part? It’s so easy to dress this look down for daytime with trainers and chunky knitwear, so all you need to do is a quick shoe change before you head out for your V-Day evening celebrations.
2. Colourful trouser suit
Often overlooked because of its office-y connotations, the trouser suit is such a useful outfit to have in your wardrobe. Monikh’s chartreuse, slightly oversized version is a joyful twist on what can sometimes be an overly formal look.
The key is to keep it simple – let the suit do the hard work and keep accessories to a minimum, just add some barely-there heels and a simple bag.
If you need another reason to invest in a trouser suit, bear this in mind – both pieces can be worn separately so you get multiple outfits from it.
3. Slip skirt + knitted top
Few pieces are as essential as a satin slip skirt. The 90s throwback is a versatile piece that can be worn all year round, for multiple occasions, day or night.
For Valentine’s Day outfits, try pairing yours with a thin, long-sleeved knit, like Lucy Williams, for an effortless but impactful look.
With an outfit as beautifully simple as this you can afford to be a little heavier handed with your accessories – try a mini bag and some statement heels or flats, and go all-out on jewellery.
4. LBD 2.0
We all know and love the little black dress, but meet the LBD 2.0 – a classic wear-forever piece but with something a little extra; feathers!
Feathered LBDs have long been a classic choice – for me they always bring to mind Kate Moss circa 1995 when she graced the red carpet with then-boyfriend Johnny Depp in an off-the-shoulder black cocktail dress with a delicately feathered neckline. Simple, sophisticated and a piece you’ll wear again and again for events or special occasions.
There are plenty of options on the high street currently, but it’s also worth scouring second-hand clothes shops and websites for a vintage version.
Keep the rest of your outfit pared back and clean, let the LBD 2.0 do the hard work.
5. Party trousers + oversized blazer
Party trousers are exactly what they say they are – trousers with added sparkle! A huge trend around party season, you may already have a pair that you bought for your Christmas festivities. If so, dig them out and dust them off for V Day because they are perfect for it.
Danielle Jinadu has nailed the look by pairing hers with an oversized, masculine black blazer, which nicely balances the femininity of her party trousers.
The trousers are the main attraction here, so keep everything else low-key and minimal.
