Winter Wonderland takes place in London’s Hyde Park each year, and from the minute it opens its gates, the festive theme park is jam-packed each day.
It reopened for the Christmas season, and whether you’re heading there for a cute first date or a fun day out with the girls, Winter Wonderland is a tricky event to dress for.
After all, looking cute, stylish and warm all at once is no mean feat. Throw in that although it’s outdoors, what with rides and activities galore, you’ll likely to run more hot than cold any way. The food stalls are tempting (I’d highly recommend a hot chocolate), which means you need an outfit you can feast in, walk in, sit on various fairground rides comfortably in and ice skate in – and that’s all before we even get to who you’re actually going with to suss out the vibe.
I’ve been a handful of times and can safely give you a few tips.
Firstly, thanks to the grass mixed with rain and potential snow depending on when you go, steer clear of any footwear you absolutely love and would cry if they got destroyed. There’s a lot of walking so comfort is key. Avoid bulky coats and go for a warm lightweight one that won’t weigh you down during activities, and a crossbody bag is a must to leave you hands-free for that hot chocolate I mentioned and festive carnival games.
OK, so now that we’ve got the style dos and don’ts out of the way, here’s what to wear to Winter Wonderland this season based on who you’re going with and the vibe of the day…
If you’re on a date
Winter Wonderland is such a good first date, IMO: you won’t be short of conversation, it’s fun and there’s lots to do, but it also means you’ll want to look fabulous, which isn’t the easiest for a chilly evening on rollercoasters.
Jeans are a no-brainer: if you go for a pair with 1-2% stretch, you’ll feel comfortable and at ease. A chunky knit is a must, especially if you’re heading there in the evening, while a belted coat will give you some shape and keep you warm. Throw on a pair of trainers (not your favourite pair though, remember) and a scarf or cute beanie hat.
Gold jewellery and a jazzy hair clip will add interest, and you’re good to go!
If you’re out with the family
If you’ll be hitting the helter-skelter with little ones or standing by as your dad attempts to win a giant polar bear teddy for your mum on the games, go for comfort. That’s not to say we have to sacrifice on style, however, just that you can go all out cosy for a day with the family.
Start with a warm tracksuit: you’ll be able to dart around after any kids in the group and won’t get chilly taking 100 pictures of them on the ice rink. Uggs (or dupes!) will keep your feet warm all day and a chic coat and a leather crossbody bag will add polish to this Winter Wonderland outfit.
If you’re out for a late one with friends
Winter Wonderland closes at 10pm, so heading for an early dinner then straight to the festivities is a cute girls’ evening out.
You’ll want to put your best fashion foot forward here, so try leather trousers as they’re having a moment this season. In the right shape, they’ll feel trendier than jeans, but just as comfy as leggings, adding an edge to a sweatshirt and trainers combo.
An Aviator jacket brings the warmth and adds to the cool girl vibe. Throw on some chunky gold hoops and sunglasses for a casual It girl look.
If it’s your work away day
When you’re heading out with colleagues on an official work trip, you want to toe the smart casual line. As much as it’s a fun team bonding day out, you should still aim for an air of professionalism about you, and that extends to your wardrobe choices.
I’d go for smart jeans (no acid wash, rips or low baggy styles, please), and a minimal knit paired with sleek chunky boots. A fashion-forward off-duty look that errs on the polished side. Add a quilted jacket and a shoulder bag (high-low balance), and gold jewellery for this winter wonderland outfit.
