Forgive me for writing this in January halfway through winter, but if you’re anything like me, you’ve only started attempting to hit the gym properly from last week any way so no worry at all, but it does mean we need to consider what to wear.
As well as needing to be warm en route, gyms are notorious for being a little chilly thanks to over-active air-conditioning since everyone’s sweating, but a few wardrobe swaps will see you through.
As well as that, in the summer months, shorts, tank tops and matching pastel sets just work, whereas post-Christmas indulging and in colder weather, you might appreciate more coverage and some seasonal shades.
This is the perfect outfit formula if you’re heading to the gym this winter:
The warm top
Warm doesn’t need to mean heavy, and the best outfits (in the gym and outside) will comprise of layers rather than one bulky item. If you get too warm, peel them off, and vice versa you can add more lightweight layers if you need to get warm.
Gymshark is great for such base layer styles. This sweat-wicking top in chic sage green won’t feel like a burden during cardio. It keeps your body at the perfect temperature no matter where you work out, so it’s an investment piece you’ll wear through summer, too.
The cosy socks
Flimsy trainer socks just won’t cut it in January, so treat yourself to a super soft update by way of cult Instagram favourite, Adanola. Not only do they feature the brands logo (which gym buffs will nod at), but they’re properly thick and soft so ideal for HIIT training and skipping.
Off-duty, pair them with Birkenstock Boston’s and New Balance trainers. The cost-per-wear will be in minus by spring.
The leggings
These Sweaty Betty leggings have a fleece-like brushed feel inside for extra warmth, so you’d be forgiven for not wanting to take them off post-workout. Whether you train in or outdoors, they’ll wick sweat away and keep you warm, all while being water-resistant. They’re an investment at £100, but they’re currently on sale at half the price so run, don’t walk…
The jacket
Remember, little light layers are key, so if you get the base top right, you won’t need a weighty quilted puffer on top. This chic fleece from M&S’ brilliant GoodMove range is perfect – size up if you want to fit a warmer top underneath, or get your normal size and wear it over a sports bra.
It also has an anti-pilling finish to stop it from bobbling so you can turn to it winter after winter.
