When I went to Japan, my priorities were different to my then-boyfriend’s. He wanted to go for the ramen and other delectable goods, as a self-proclaimed foodie. I was there (along with of course, the culture and incredible things to do and see), for the beauty. Japanese drugstores were like mythical spaces to me, full to the brim with makeup, skincare and other magical bits I knew I couldn’t get my hands on in the UK.
Before going, I did my research on what I needed to pick up while out there (full haul below), and one thing consistently came up again and again: the Bioré UV Aqua Water Essence Sunscreen, which was beloved as the nation’s go-to SPF.
Bringing it home, I felt like I’d struck gold: the formula was lightweight, the smell was pleasant and not overbearing, and makeup layered beautifully atop. The only issue was how quickly I flew through the little blue tube, all the while suppressing the knowledge I would never be able to replace my empty. That is… until now.

Bioré has finally launched its bestselling SPF in the UK, just in time for summer. The product is one of my all time faves in the SPF category – here’s why.
Bioré UV Aqua Water Essence Sunscreen: my verdict
- Price: RRP £15.99
- SPF strength available: Two options, SPF 30 and SPF 50
- Formula & finish: Super lightweight essence, non sticky, sinks in quickly and easily
Why is the Bioré SPF such a cult product?
In the lead up to my trip to Japan, I discovered just how cult this Bioré SPF really was, with one selling every 15 seconds in the country. It has also had 68.7 million views on TikTok via dedicated videos to the product.
When it arrived on British shores, the SPF amassed the biggest waiting list UK retailer Superdrug had ever seen within skincare and cosmetics.
So just why is the sunscreen so damn popular and coveted?
First up is the texture, finish and overall formula. This is a super lightweight watery lotion that sinks into skin like a dream, leaving a perfect base for makeup. It is ultra-sheer and leaves no white cast, meaning it is suitable for all skin tones.
It also works across all skin types, with those experiencing dryness benefitting from a hefty dose of hyaluronic acid, and anyone with oily skin getting on well with the featherlight feel. The product also has less oil content than a typical SPF due to the water molecules encapsulated in a UV film within the formula.
Essentially, if you’re wary of using SPF because you think it may clog pores or make you feel greasy, this is the antidote.
Where can you buy the Bioré SPF?
Both the SPF 30 and SPF 50 are available now exclusively at Superdrug.
You can pick them up for £14.99 and £15.99 respectively at superdrug.com.
