I’m a self-confessed lipstick fiend with absolutely zero boundaries when it comes to colour, finish or – for my sins – price tag, which is highlighted by my obsessively organised lipstick shelf on my bedroom bookcase.
In true Confessions of a Shopaholic style, if I see a lipstick, I can’t stop myself from trying it. I mean it when I say I’m infatuated with these little tubes of pigmented joy.
But, despite having an everlasting love for my extensive Charlotte Tilbury and By Terry lipstick collection, my bank balance has been starting to feel the effects of having a designer product habit. So, I decided, something had to change.
Enter: Maybelline’s SuperStay Vinyl Ink.
Maybelline Superstay Vinyl Ink: my verdict
- Price: RRP £11.99
- Shades: 18 including pinks, browns, purples and reds
- Finish: an overall matte texture with glow that catches the light. Or in other words, vinyl.
What is different about Maybelline’s SuperStay Vinyl Ink?
My interest was piqued by its hybrid finish; not quite a lipstick, not quite a lip gloss – the vibrant red that caught my eye settled somewhere in between – I was swayed to give this high street liquid formula a chance.
Surprisingly, it wasn’t love at first sight. Despite feeling hydrating as it went on, it was immediately tacky and when I touched my lips, the colour came straight off on my finger. So far, not especially good.
But despite my initial hesitance, I found myself admiring my lips in the mirror. The latex-like finish gave my pout an extra oomph of fullness, while the doe-foot applicator had allowed me to apply the orange-red shade precisely and smoothly (not something that’s always so easily done). I was already hooked.

Which are the newest shades of Maybelline’s SuperStay Vinyl Ink?
Maybelline’s SuperStay Vinyl Ink just added an extra eight nude hues to its lineup, including ‘Peppy,’ ‘Captivated,’ ‘Extra’ and ‘Fearless,’ bringing the total shade range to 18. These range from warm, reddy hues to light, peachy pinks.
How long does the Maybelline SuperStay Vinyl Ink take to dry?
The cynic that I am, I was expecting the £11.99 liquid lipstick to match its impressively affordable price tag and come off on every coffee mug, wine glass and water bottle in sight. So, I did the sensible thing and popped the chunky rectangular lippie into my handbag, ready to reapply throughout the day.
But about five minutes after application, something magical happened.
The formula dried down and that was that. It didn’t budge. Not through a hurried morning cup of tea, a lunch consisting of a sandwich and crisps, a pizza dinner (it was a very un-lipstick friendly day), or summer evening drinks.
The Maybelline Vinyl Ink stayed firmly put, rendering the top-up tube I’d so diligently placed in my handbag, well, redundant.
And so began my love affair with this high street hero. Every time I wear Red Hot, I get comments and questions like, “I love your lipstick, where’s it from?” And when I’m able to answer that it’s by Maybelline, I feel like a beauty Samaritan because I know they’re going to be able to discover how good it is too, without breaking the bank.
What does Maybelline’s SuperStay Vinyl Ink feel like on?
So, I’ve covered that it lasts, but how does it feel to wear? Well, surprisingly – or maybe unsurprisingly as all my preconceptions about this lippie were proved to be entirely wrong – very comfortable. Despite needing to give the tackiness a hot minute to settle down, it does feel as though you’re not wearing any lipstick at all.
How often do you need to apply Maybelline’s SuperStay Vinyl Ink?
That’s the beauty of Vinyl Ink, and one of the main reasons as to why I’ve been able to convert all my friends onto it too; you can put it on, wait for it to dry and then completely forget about it.
If ever I’ve learnt the lesson don’t judge a book by its cover – or a lipstick by its price tag – it’s with Vinyl Ink. Long lasting, with a beautiful oxymoronic shiny but matte finish, I’m completely sold.
For just over ten pounds, my lips and bank balance can both agree on one thing: there’s nothing quite like vinyl.
Which other shades does Maybelline’s SuperStay Vinyl Ink come in?
Maybelline’s SuperStay Vinyl Ink currently comes in 18 shades, from deep pinks to brownish nudes and bright reds.
