The holiday season is full of lists: Christmas present lists, supermarket shopping lists and, if you’re heading home for the holidays you’ll undoubtedly be making a list of all the outfits you need to prep for. And, now i’m just guessing here, but I imagine that that list is pretty long – after all, you’ve got to be prepared for whatever festive event may get thrown at you, right? Wrong!
You see, while Christmas may be the most wonderful time of year and I’ll agree it’s definitely not the quietest, there are actually only a limited number of days, and consequently a limited number of events you actually need to get dressed for. Be honest, do you really need that fourth sequin dress when in reality you’re probably going to spend most of your time curled up on the sofa with a box of Fererro Rochers? I think not.
So read on for a list of all the outfits you’ll need to see you through from Christmas to New Year. ‘Tis the season for stress-free dressing not overflowing suitcases…
Christmas Eve
Christmas Eve calls for one outfit and one outfit only: a set of fabulously festive pyjamas, of course. Brushed cotton sets offer the ultimate in comfort and this tartan style from Chelsea Peers also come in men’s and kids sizes too if you’re into the cute matching family feel.
In my case, I’d think of Christmas Eve PJ’s as a present to myself and go for a luxe satin pair. This burgundy set from Fable and Eve nod to the festive period but are still chic enough to wear all year round. I’d even re-work these as a co-ord with heels for a dinner party or drinks if an unexpected invite arrives.
Christmas Day
What to wear on Christmas Day is definitely a controversial affair. I sit firmly in the dress down camp so you’ll usually find me in a mildly festive jumper and leggings. This one from Zara is currently top of my shopping list and I’ll be picking it up in a size bigger than normal for a relaxed oversized fit.
If you fall into the dress-up camp however, there are some amazing pieces on the high street sure to strike the right amount of sparkle for the Christmas dinner table. If you want something truly show-stopping, this sequin Zara dress will tick all your boxes, or try this Warehouse velvet suit with a pair of diamante sling backs for a subtle yet seasonal look.
Boxing Day
The perfect boxing day outfit is all about balance as it needs to take your from binging Christmas films on the sofa, then out for the obligatory Boxing Day walk and back to the sofa again to reward yourself with a mince pie and mulled wine.
With that in mind, I’d opt for a cosy sweatshirt, leggings and a pair of chunky boots for an outfit that looks chic but doesn’t scrimp on the practicalities. Adanola’s wrap leggings are high waisted to hug you in all the right places yet they’re still comfy enough to lounge around in too.
And don’t forget your hat and scarf if you are venturing out – this neon shade will add the perfect pop of colour to any look.
Boxing Night
Is it Boxing Day Eve or Boxing Night? Who knows, but one thing I do know is you’re going to need an outfit for it. For me, Boxing Night is usually spent at the pub with friends so I want an outfit that nods to the festive season without feeling to OTT.
This metallic vest from Next is a great option as it can easily be dressed up or down. I’d wear it with a pair of faux leather trousers and some sparkly statement boots for the perfect smart/casual look, or, you could also wear it with a black satin midi skirt and a pair of court heels for a more dressed up feel.
The in-between days
What day is it? What am I meant to be doing? Is it still acceptable to be listening to Christmas songs? All questions that pass through my head on those strange days in between Christmas and New Year’s. One thing I won’t be thinking about however is what to wear as, in my opinion, this is the time when elevated loungewear really comes into its own.
You want pieces that are comfortable enough to watch old movies on the sofa in but also won’t look out of place to meet the girls for a festive hot chocolate too. So, opt for luxe fabrics like cashmere (or cashmere blends, which are much more purse friendly but still just as soft) and detailing like thick ribbing. A matching co-ord will also give a put together feel with minimal effort, something these days are most definitely about.
