It’s time to consider one of your most important looks of the year: the New Year’s Eve outfit.
The dress code for New Year’s Eve will depend entirely on what your plans are. The brief might be to bring on the glam (a full-on frothy gown for a black tie soiree or dressy cocktail party) or it might be to stay relaxed (jeans and a nice top would suffice for drinks at a friend’s house).
Whether you intend to go big or stay home, here are my ideas for a New Year’s Eve outfit that’ll ring in 2023 in style…
The sleek trouser suit
If you fancy smartening up in tailoring this NYE, start by looking for a suit in a party-worthy fabric – brocade, satin and jacquard all have a metallic sheen. Next think about what, if anything, you want to wear underneath, especially if you’re hitting a packed dance floor and might ditch your jacket.
Rochelle Humes wore this olive green two-piece by Italian tailoring label Hebe Studios to ITV’s work Christmas party in 2021 and just added a matching mini bag.
All-over sequinned dresses
Sequins may sound like the most obvious go-to dress for party season, but they can still be made to feel fresh for a New Year’s Eve outfit. It’s all in the colour you choose, and the cut of your dress.
This year shades of green, yellow and purple are dominating on the high street – TV presenter Maya Jama picked a lime green bodycon style with a cut out back.
The metallic outfit
Yes, we all love a sequin. But beyond the party paillettes, there are plenty of other ways to add excessive shimmer to your NYE look.
Actress Bel Powley, for example, is wearing a chainmail Paco Rabanne skirt and top here, while Gigi Hadid went for a rhinestone studded bodycon dress by Self Portrait for a cocktail party this autumn.
The semi-sheer tights outfit
Whether your night is to be spent at the local pub or in a swish restaurant, one of the most budget-friendly ways to update any NYE outfit is with great tights.
Semi-sheer tights and a little black dress (as seen on The Attico founder Giorgia Tordini) is a classic combination, but you could just as easily dress up an old mini with metallic or even coloured hosiery for a New Year’s Eve outfit.

Festive froth in a ruffled dress
Some NYE settings call for more drama. Voluminous ruffles are instantly impactful and look a little regal – ideal for a black tie dress code or cocktails in a fairytale-worthy location.
Bridgerton actress Nicola Coughlan’s pastel blue confection comes from Selezza London, an authority label when it comes to scrunchy tulle designs.
A sweet wrapper satin dress
If you want to feel festive without wearing any actual sparkle, satin is the fabric for you.
In its sweet wrapper shade, stylist Emma Thatcher’s silk dress by Free People looks expensive and decadent – the buzz words anyone would want associated with their NYE look.
A neon bodycon outfit
Switch up your NYE colour palette with a move on from the traditional dark hues and jewel tones.
Make ‘the brighter the better’ your 2023 style mantra, as demonstrated by stylist Nana Acheampong, who clashes lime, orange and turquoise tones expertly.
Accessories galore
If earrings maketh the outfit, then on New Year’s Eve it’s time to go all out.
Susie Lau proves that more is absolutely more in her dress by The Attico, brooch-front Roger Vivier shoes and some suitably hefty chandelier earrings. Even if she was wearing said earrings with jeans and a white T-shirt, she would look just as ready to celebrate, and ring in 2023 in style.
