We all know that the catwalks dictate the trends: what the designers showcase at fashion shows throughout the year set the tone on the high street in the months that follow. So in the case of the huge spring summer trends we saw on the catwalks last September, they’ve now filtered down through to our favourite stores just in time for the warmer weather.
Not every trend is a wearable one, and by that I mean one that works day-to-day for a normal lifestyle. So I weeded out the ones that we’re unlikely to want to copy for the office on Monday (corsets and tie-dye mesh dresses, I’m looking at you), to focus on the trends that’ll provide us with style inspiration for the months ahead.
Here’s what to buy right now to be on-trend all spring and summer long…
Trend 1: Elevated basics
By now, you should all know how strongly I feel about good-quality basics. They’re the cornerstones of our wardrobe and a necessity in every outfit, so it’s worth investing in great ones since you’ll wear them so often.
Well, this season, elevated basics ARE the outfit. Think slick white shirts with silky maxi skirts, luxe trench coats and simple strappy sandals. It’s understated luxury (but with an accessible price tag), and always looks expensive.
It was spotted at Tibi, Max Mara and The Row so see them as your outfit inspo.
Trend 2: Oversized blazers
Blazers are a failsafe way of smartening up virtually any outfit. From jeans and a T-shirt to a printed dress and trainers, throw the tailored jacket over anything to elevate it, which is particularly handy when it comes to workwear.
This season, slightly slouchier styles feel more modern. On the catwalks, Dries Van Noten and Rejina Pyo were the brands to look at for the best iteration and inspiration. At the latter, blazers draped artfully over the body (no waist-cinching round here), and were worn with matching oversized trousers.

Trend 3: All-things leather
Leather normally pops up in a big way on the autumn winter catwalks, but for spring, it was sprinkled in dozens of collections, adding edge and a pleasing texture clash to summery looks. A jacket is likely the easiest to wear, but look to shirts, midi skirts and wide-leg trousers to add interest to your day outfits.
By night, leather is a no-brainer. Sleek and sexy skirts and midi and mini dresses should be high on your shopping list, and don’t be afraid to branch out from black – camel, sage and burgundy are all super-chic.
Trend 4: Denim everything
Denim in the form of maxi skirts, waistcoats, blazers, shirts and accessories were spotted on the catwalks in every city. Since jeans are already a crucial component in a modern woman’s wardrobe, it’ll be easy to extend your denim collection.
A skirt or shirt will slot into a smart casual wardrobe seamlessly, and since double denim is the key look to know, you don’t even need to think too hard about how to wear it now – just swap your trusty knit for a denim shirt and you have the trend down pat.
Trend 5: Metallic silver
Scroll through your Instagram for more than 30 seconds and I’ll bet you’ll spot a silver mini skirt or cropped trousers. If there’s any item that screams new season, it’s a silver one. You’d be forgiven for thinking they might feel OTT for everyday, but they’re easily dressed down for maximum versatility and will add an edge to your day outfits – just pair with trainers, a white T-shirt and a black or grey blazer.
Gucci showcased (two) metallic lame dresses which would be perfect for a spring wedding.
Trend 6: Giant bags
It’s been all about teeny micro bags for years now, so great news for all of those everything-but-the-kitchen-sink gals: giant totes are back. They’re the ideal for the office: stash your make-up bag, laptop and a pair of kitten heels to switch to for evening drinks.
At Givenchy, giant black leather totes came complete with big silver buckles, but on the high street, totes have gone minimal. Suede styles and block-colour leather numbers in clean shapes are everywhere right now.
